World Cup Fever

It is not often that Hollywood takes a step back to watch the spotlight shine elsewhere. Every four years one single event monopolizes the media waves and brings the world to a virtual stand still. One billion people, practically one sixth of the world population, gets lured into the hypnotic charm of the World Cup, the most significant sporting event in the known universe. And there will be a whopping 30 billion views of the tournament in total. Soccer is definitely a sport that ignores geographical, language and cultural boundaries.

Although the biggest celebrities at the 2006 World Cup are the players themselves, movie, TV, and music stars will grace the stadiums in the stands and on the spotlight. As you may or may not know by now Shakira, and Wyclef Jean will not only perform, but also release a new version of the already chart topper "Hips Don't Lie" as part of the official music program of the sports event. Toni Braxton along with the English group Il Divo will also appear on the World Cup stage during the opening and final games singing "The Time of Our Lives." "Voices," the official World Cup album, has already been released and it includes names like Elton John, Elvis Presley, Kelly Clarkson, and Rod Stewart.

As the weeks go by we'll hear of what celebrities saw which game, and who attended this or that party, but true soccer fans are not likely to notice Elton John if he sang in their right ear while in the middle of a match. In the mean time, enjoy the photo galleries of the real celebrities of this phenomenon, the players of the 2006 World Cup.
