Hangin' With The Dixie Chicks
I had never met the Dixie Chicks before and I'm always excited when I get to meet someone new.
I walked into the Great Western Forum - the place where Natalie, Emily, and Martie were rehearsing for their tour, "Accidents and Accusations," which kicked off in my hometown of Detroit, Michigan. The girls later would ask me if I wanted to come to the concert in Detroit, an offer I would have considered if I didn't have other plans.
When the girls come over, they apologize for keeping me waiting. Natalie is really cute. I tell her that there is "less" of her because of her recent weight loss. She teases that she is on the Mary-Kate Olsen diet.
Ticket sales in some cities are doing well - not so good in others. They know the "controversy" -- the group's comments about President Bush -- is to blame. There are some country radio stations that are still not playing their music. But they are adamant that low ticket sales or not, they will stay true to who they are.
We talk about Faith Hill's new song that seems to be bashing the administration and its stance on the war and the fact that no one is boycotting Faith or her music. The Dixie Chicks say it was a different time when they spoke out -- the war had just started, the President's approval ratings were at an all-time high, and people were totally behind the administration.
We shift our focus to the tour - a very strict rehearsal schedule. The tour will include a mix of old songs and new. Natalie got her way and they won't be singing "There's Your Trouble" even though it's a fan favorite. They are excited that their children will be touring with them. Between the three of them, they have 7 kids ages 5 and under! They joke about whose tour bus is the messiest. (They agree, it's Emily's!)
With the "controversy" basically behind them, the girls feel very confident about this tour - believing that their true fans will support them no matter what!
