Access' Big Plans
Yesterday afternoon, we saw the future of Access Hollywood. And I am here to tell you it looks good.
Let me backtrack for a second...
Three weeks or so ago, a few of us got together in a surprisingly barren conference room at the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel to eat M&Ms and stare out the gigantic plate glass windows at the saggy-costumed slightly-shady characters who parade up and down in front of Mann's Chinese to the delight of tourists. We also talked about the show. For two very long but satisfying days, we went over what works well, what needs to go, and what we have to concentrate on for the new season - and now the time has come for the things we came up with to be set in motion.
The Boss got things officially rolling a little over 12 hours ago by delivering a positively Rockne-esqe speech followed by 70 minutes of nuts, bolts, statistics, declarations and jokes at the expense of Access' Grand Old News Man, The Mighty Mighty Mountain Man George Larrimore.
Without giving away details, I can tell you that we are not burning things down to start over. There's no need. The state of the union is strong here at Access. And at the risk of sounding like I've drunk the Kool-Aid, it's only getting stronger.
That said, one of the announcements made yesterday was that the segment New At The Movies was never to appear on the show again - thanks to its natural propensity to suck under deliver. So what happens' This morning, after Rob has vindictively and ferociously scratched New At The Movies from today's rundown sight unseen, we screen Kelsey's cut of "New At The Movies: World Trade Center" and lo and behold, it's a great piece. A total homerun that may have granted our late and lamented NATM a reprieve for at least one more day.
