A Very 'Good Year'

(November 1, 2006) -- 'A Good Year.' I must say, a very good year!

Monday evening, I attended the Women and Wine screening of Russell Crowe's new movie, 'A Good Year.' It's a Russell we have never seen. Gone are the bulging biceps of Maximus from 'Gladiator' and the intense and troubled John Nash in 'A Beautiful Mind.' Okay, I'm going to say it, 'A kinder, gentler Russell Crowe.' Finally, a Russell I can get on board with. And I love, just love, the spectacles that he wears. Tortoise shell'need I say more' His character is Max Skinner, a London day trader in a Saville Row suit and crisp white shirt. Ooh baby. Inherits a vineyard in Provence. Geez! In spite of this, I do think Monsieur Crowe was mis-cast but on to more appetizing dialogue.

Of course, the French countryside, breathtaking vineyards and the oh too faboo French accent showcases this film as more of an estrogen fest than testosterone bravado, if you know what I mean. Can it be said that it is a kinder, gentler Ridley Scott who brought this film to the screen' After all, it is he who directed the adrenaline driven 'Alien' and 'Gladiator.' There is a little vibe of 'Notting Hill' and 'Love Actually.' Oh Ridley, we hardly know ya. I was ready to pack my bag, buy some wine, a baguette and cheese and tour the wine region in France.

And oh, the wine. Where to begin' Sharon Boorstin co-founder and editorial director of W&W along with Marc Schector Sr. VP (and husband of W&W CEO Julie Brosterman) hosted, along with their hard working team pouring the best of the best grape from the Provence region with Michael Winthrop, an importer of fine French wines at Vigneron Imports and Salome Leventis. The vin flowed freely and with great elegance. Fresh fruit, cheeses and nibblies. The Crest Theatre is just perfect for such a fun filled event.

With each screening, the W&W contingent grows by leaps and bounds. As you will notice in the following photos, there were plenty of men in attendance and they were clearly thrilled to be part of this 'spirit of sisterhood.' ' even Gale Ann Hurd was in the house! The entrance line was around the corner. Gift bags were passed out for Women and Wine members with a beautiful calendar of Provence and stills from the film.
