Live From Tori Spelling's Garage Sale
by Laura Saltman
Normally, I jump right into writing theses articles but I'm basically speechless after my morning at Tori Spelling's estate sale. So, let's just start at the beginning. For those of you who may not have heard this story, on Monday, an announcement came out that Tori was holding this once in a lifetime event with a company called the "Estate Sale Shop" at her Studio City home.
There were photos posted on their site of items for sale. The sale is open to the public. So, this means that absolutely anyone who wants to come by can, Fri. and Sat. until 5pm. It begs the question 'why would someone as famous or well known as Tori hold what is essentially a garage sale'? That's an easy answer. She was filming it all for a new reality show that she and her husband, Dean McDermott, are doing for the Oxygen network.
Tuesday morning rolls around and the media gets a hold of the story and it's all over the internet and on every entertainment show. So, it was no surprise that when I arrived at Tori's house at 8:30am it was absolute chaos outside. Security was handing out numbers to the 50 or so people lined up. The sale was set to start at 9am. Thanks to my genius idea to send one of our runners down at 6:30am to hold a spot, I ended up with number 14. Within 20 minutes the crowd had swelled and the media had doubled. Then came the helicopters. I guess in a town that is known for those crazy televised car chases (which actually I realize we haven't had any recently!) helicopters staking out Tori's house shouldn't surprise me.
I spoke with several people in line that had been there since about 5:30am. Noone was really looking for anything in particular, just a little piece of Tori to take home. No cameras other than Oxygen were allowed inside and the security was very adamant about this. So, I was left to just go inside and check it out sans my crew.
Twenty-seven minutes after the doors were to open they let the first twenty people in. Immediately at the door my cell phone was taken and my purse. So, empty handed I walk in and there is Tori looking adorable in her green maternity dress. First thing I notice is that the place looks like someone threw up Shabby Chic. There are antique style chairs, couches and armoires everywhere. I turn the corner to find a table full of the ugliest floral dishes I've ever seen. On to the kitchen where a woman is overwhelmed by the fact that she could buy an old script from "Beverly Hills, 90210". Next, I went into the garage which was filled with mostly junk items and a ton of Christmas decorations.
Finally, I start to head upstairs to the Mecca.. Tori's bedroom. I'm on the hunt for the only thing I care about Louis' and Guccis and Pradas oh my. Come to find out that all the expensive purses are being sold on eBay. I'm devastated. I find one cute black leather purse but wasn't willing to part with the $175 Tori was charging. Next I step into the bathroom where I kid you not there were old, used lipsticks, nail polishes, lotions and cremes for sale. I also catch a glimpse of some peignoir and bedroom shoes.
I head into the other bedrooms where there is clothing galore hanging in the closets. However, if you are not a size 2 or 0 then don't bother even trying anything on. A man walks by who has grabbed perhaps the hottest item of all, a set of vintage Louis Vuitton luggage that had been advertised online. He walks off with it for a cool $1600. My guess is it's worth $8000 plus.
Lastly, I head downstairs and outside to the patio where I spot Tori hanging out on a bench. She and I chat for about five minutes. She tells me that she is getting rid of this stuff because she has changed her style from shabby chic to modern and it just didn't work anymore. She also needed to make room for her new baby and isn't that what all normal people do "make room for baby." Most of the stuff she is selling has been in storage and they literally are selling everything she has. The items she will miss most will be the furniture. We joked about the lipsticks and she just laughed and said the Oxygen producers just threw everything in.
I leave empty handed and head outside to wait to see what others have bought. Then I get an email from my boyfriend that he needs someone to talk to Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show (where he works.) Ryan wants to know all the scoop from the Tori sale. Problem is that no one at the show actually knows that my boyfriend and I are a couple. So, I have to call in and just say I'm a listener. Ryan and I used to work together at his talk show but fortunately he doesn't recognize my voice. He tries to get me to have security allow me to put him on the phone with Tori. One of the security guy takes me up to the door but I immediately get thrown off the property by an Oxygen producer. Ironically, I also get offered a job at the station by Ryan for my excellent on the scene reporting. The secret will be out tomorrow when I attend the KIIS holiday party.
Minutes later the shoppers start coming out with their purchases. Let me tell you this stuff isn't cheap! A woman paid $15 for a comb and $5 for a exfoliating sponge with a rubber ducky on it. Another guy, who I am now informed is the original "Party Monster" that Macaulay Culkin played in a movie, bought a pillow that said "If its not one thing. It's Your Mother" for $75. He informs me that he found whips and chains hanging in Tori's closet. Very naughty, Tori!
The media finally stars to leave and in a classic and ridiculous moment I watch Steven Cojocaro, who had been shooting stuff for "The Insider", say to his producer, "Lots of me. Lots of me, make sure this piece has lots of me." I've worked in this business for 14 years and never have I heard an on-camera person tell that to someone.
Just as I'm getting ready to leave, two men approach the security saying they are the owner of this home and produce a drivers license saying so. I'm thinking there is going to be major drama but it turns out these guys really do own the house and have for twenty five years. They rented it to Tori many years ago and now that she has moved out are re-renting it. They came by to put the 'For Lease' sign up today.
Most of the folks I spoke to were planning to re-sell their items on eBay. So, if you can't make the sale then you can still own a piece of Tori.
