'Grey's' Envy: Chandra Wilson

If I were going to be a famous actress working in Hollywood I think Chandra Wilson of "Grey's Anatomy" would be the person whose life I would most like to have. She's a great actress on a mega hit TV show who has received an Emmy nomination and this morning a SAG nomination. Yet, she doesn't have the prying eyes of the paparazzi following her around constantly. Nobody bugs her about her personal life. Nobody cares who she is dating or married to or what designer clothes she is buying. She's able to raise her family and still go to a job she loves every day. Plus, I'm sure she makes a pretty penny on "Grey's." Sounds like a great life to me.

This morning I was on the set of "Grey's Anatomy" to talk to Chandra about her SAG nomination for Best Actress. While Chandra was busy filming on the show's main hospital set my crew and I hung out on Stage Two where Meredith's house set is. I've never been on the "Grey's" set so of course I had to take a peak around. Even after 15 or so years in this business it still makes me laugh how small the sets actually are compared to how they look on TV. There are hallways that you think lead into bedrooms that actually lead to nowhere. I did stumble on one part of the set I don't recall ever seeing. The house's garage style laundry room. I can't recall a scene ever filmed in there. Maybe its for an upcoming episode or maybe I just never noticed.

Finally, after waiting for about an hour, Chandra comes walking in with a huge smile on her face. She was giggly about her nomination which she heard about while getting the kids ready for school. Her co-star, Sandra Oh, called her from the nominations which she was announcing early this morning, "She called to let me know she was passing the hat."

It was Sandra who got the only single acting nomination last year. The cast is also up for Best Ensemble at the this year's SAG Awards, "We are all floating off that ensemble nomination because that really lets us know we are holding this thing together. It takes all of us to make it happen. So that's the one that usually we all get so excited about."

I love actors like Chandra who are excited about being nominated for awards, "It's exciting because you get to see some people that you haven't seen in awhile and the food is usually pretty good in the room. It's a whole other dress, its a whole other shoe."

It's a real bummer when you interview someone and all they can say is how it's "all about the work" and "awards and accolades mean nothing." I call BS on that. The worst is on nomination days (like the Golden Globes and the Oscars) when people issue statements through their publicists. If you don't want to go on camera to promote yourself then just simply say nothing.

You know, I tried to get some scoop out of her about the upcoming new episodes. She wasn't budging only saying, "Something new and there is going to be two parts. I can say that and its going to be some new stuff and some things."

I inquired about the recent reports that Callie and George may get engaged. I got a similar response,
"There is some stuff. There is some things. That's all I'm saying. It's way more fun to let people watch the show and watch it unravel that day then it is give out all the clues and the hints. I think the audience has so much more fun with that."

I don't! Getting scoop is my job.

Of course, I had to end my conversation by letting her know about how I saw her and her family shopping at Target last month. I love random celebrity sightings like that especially because if I were a celebrity I too would still shop at Target just like Chandra, "Absolutely because there are some things that you need to get at Target and you cant get them anywhere else. Yeah, I have to make my weekly trip over to get just the things that you can only get at Target. That's where you get the big diapers. That's where you get the econo food, the baby food you get it all at Target."

For me it's all about the dog treats and lint rollers to pick up dog hair. Baby food and diapers are way in the future!
