Tom Cruise: The 'Christ' Of Scientology?
The British newspaper The Sun is reporting today that "Tom Cruise is the new 'Christ' of Scientology."
According to a conveniently unnamed source, Church of Scientology leaders have "chosen" Cruise to spread the word about the religion to all corners of the Earth. That same "source," who's allegedly close to the actor, told the paper, "Tom has been told he is Scientology's Christ-like figure. Like Christ, he's been criticised for his views. But future generations will realise he was right."
Yes, future generations will realize he was right -- to become an actor. The story, however, is complete wrong.
Cruise's rep told GossipCop that the report, which, unfortunately, is spreading like a bad rash, is "completely not true."
Church of Scientology spokesman Tom Davis released the following statement to Access Hollywood:
“This is completely, totally and utterly a lie and a total fabrication and has no basis in the theology of Scientology in the slightest. There is not even a mechanism or scriptural background for anyone inside or outside of the Church to come up with such a concept. As well, Mr. Miscavige has never and would never characterize any church member or anyone related to Scientology in such terms nor has or would Mr. Cruise characterize himself as such.
“As well you should know that you are talking about a world wide religious organization made up of over 7500 churches, missions and groups, in 163 countries and over ten million members and while the religion was founded by one man, L. Ron Hubbard, he himself insisted that he was just a man. He was the founder and there will only ever be one founder. He was not a prophet nor is he deified in any way nor would anyone else be.”
“The Church has the largest non-governmental anti-drug program in the world, the world’s largest human rights education campaign, the largest private tutoring and literacy network in the world, the largest global emergency response force with over 95,000 strong and has grown more in the last five years than the previous 50 combined. As well Mr. Cruise’s support of such humanitarian endeavors is widely known. However, despite all this when an utterly fabricated story can be propagated in an effort to marginalize Scientology or make Scientology, its leaders or its members seem strange then you know how low the press has gotten to in order to come up with a story.”
“Again this story has no basis in reality whatsoever.”
