Where Is The Love?
Is it feeling a little mean spirited these days?
"American Idol" has done boffo ratings for the past two nights, but the tone of the show has gotten much nastier this year. Last night I watched "Beauty & the Geek," a show with even more of an opportunity to beat up on the intoverted, eccentric, "uncool" folks out there. It doesn't. It's got a lot of heart.
I am amazed the ratings were the same on night #2 as they were on debut night. And with almost 40 million viewers each night, It tells me there is a tremendous appetite for the bully role.
We're gonna get celebrity reactions to 'Idol' in the coming days, because after America Ferrera's speech at the Golden Globes, where so many were moved to tears over her triumph of bringing a plus sized, big hearted girl to such prominence, there was a hint of a different wave going out to the world from Hollywood.
Then immediately after America's speech came Isaiah Washington's impulsive and ill-advised use of the word 'faggot' in defending himself.....(Why he chose the world media at a triumphant moment for the cast I cannot understand).
Isaiah sat across from Nancy and me right after that outburst and I asked him about it directly. His vehement defense and explanations are what you've seen on over the last 2 nights on Access. (If not, click on it).
My gut tells me that, while his comment was distasteful, his intent was to appear color blind and all accepting by just blurting it out there....as if to say, "Come on, Mr. Reporter, no need to skim around the topic. Let's hear it".
Isaiah felt the need to say something because apparently the scandal won't go away. I'm in the center of this world every day. To me, it had gone away. Maybe subconsciously he missed it.
Nonetheless, what's going on right now feels mean spirited. I'm afraid most people have substituted being honestly offended for dramatic effect and sales. Isaiah needs to honestly explain himself.
Those who are not truly upset but have joined the witch hunt for professional gain should stop. Those who are sincerely hurt, I understand and wish you healing.
Finally, Lindsay Lohan has gone to rehab and way too many people are pointing the gotcha finger. She is a kid, and whether or not she has been totally truthful about her partying ways in countless interviews (and we all know now...more often 'not'), we should wish her a full, healthy recovery. How anyone could wish otherwise is a frightening prospect.
So.....need some love back.
It is almost painful to watch American Idol nowadays. I agree with Billy- the show has gotten much nastier than necessary. I spend all day dealing with smack from other people... the last thing I need is to spend two hours a night watching the same thing happen to people on TV!
