A 'Snicker's' Rebuttal
By Annie Krasnow, Coordinating Editor, AH.com
Everyone loves a funny Super Bowl commercial. In fact, that's why many people watch the game in the first place. But, the Super Bowl is a sporting event first and foremost. And the sports world happens to be a homophobic one. There are very few professional players that are out of the closet and NO active male team player has ever declared his homosexuality publicly. In the incredibly testosterone charged big game atmosphere, it is irresponsible for SNICKERS to have run their ad.
Why is making fun of gay people acceptable? If this were a white woman and a black man going in for an accidental kiss, would it be funny that the characters acted disgusted? Maybe 50 years ago, but today it would be bigotry. It is dangerous to say that any type of person is disgusting. And it is dangerous to say that being gay makes you less of a man .
Yes, the ad got a lot of press. And we're talking about SNICKERS. But we are also continuing to have much needed dialogue about the homophobic sports culture. It's a good thing that the fun is being taken out of prejudice.
I think it would have made more sense if it were two girls but I see your point.
