DOS: The 'Anatomy' Of 'Brothers & Sisters'

Ok I confess -- if I wasn't a proud Huddleston I'd give my left foot to be a Walker!

I was honored to be front and center last night at a sort of TV family reunion as the Walker clan from ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" gathered in their Monday best for the Museum of Television and Radio's William S. Paley Festival. I admit this great show reminds me of my fave shows of the past that touched my heart--- if briefly.

ABC's beautifully written "Once & Again" (cancelled after three perfect seasons) and the very short lived (cancelled after only one freakin' season-a tragedy) WB's "Jack and Bobby". Last night I was reminded why I often feel the same way when watching this dysfunctional family night time soap-when I met the show runner and executive producer/writer Greg Berlanti . This super bright and surprisingly young guy created my "Jack and Bobby!" Duh!

When two-time Oscar winner Sally Field walked up to me I was completely floored. "Sally, I'm not worthy." I said. She was flattered. I mean come on she's Norma Rae for goodness sake. (I've been called that in my day) and what fan of hers doesn't love her tear-jerker scene in "Steal Magnolias". I soon picked up on the fact that often Sally blurs the lines when talking about her TV kids. She adores them. Like her liberal minded character Nora, she'd fight to the bitter end for her spawn! "It is a great group of actors and I would kill anybody who would hurt them I feel that way about them." I believe her.

You look at this amazing ensemble led perfectly by family matriarch Sally and Calista Flockhart and you just hope and pray they don't start to implode like the cast of "Grey's Anatomy". Egos, on set brawls, and contract disputes..Calista's heard all about the drama behind the scenes of that other ABC show. She's worked in TV for a long time and is clueless about how you keep that stuff from happening with large casts. "I have no idea. I don't know how you prevent that."

"Look, you get a bunch of people together," star Balthazar Getty adds "And things are liable to happen. I didn't foresee it, they probably didn't foresee it either. I am sure anything is possible but we just really love each other and we have a great time."

And like most families they team up to protect each other. When rumors began circulating that Sally Field was actually dating actor David Annable who play's her youngest son on the series, Annable says they squelched the tabloid reports immediately--and got a good laugh!

"There was definitely rumors we put that to rest hopefully. I mean it is literally one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my life and I showed my mom and it's hanging in my room. It is pretty hilarious."

David has also been reportedly dating "Grey's" star Kate Walsh. When I asked him if that story was true he paused and then gave that answer we hear in Hollywood all too often "Uh...no we are just friends we are actually just friends yeah." Uh ok pal!

Inside the night's question and answer session with the cast I watched as this cast actually enjoyed each other's company (at least for now). Sally graciously accepts another of her TV sons Matthew Rhys' suit jacket. She was chilly so he was helping momma out. Rob Lowe and Calista whispered to each other through out the night and giggled.

Will that chemistry that blows up on screen continue into season two or will the Senator take off for the White House? Rob was very P.C.--"At the moment I am signed as the special guest star and I think that is a good thing um but uh we will see what happens so far so good...and then we'll see how it goes. How's that for a political answer?"

While ratings aren't exactly where they need to be, they're all confident they will see their sophomore season! It's part of my nightly prayers!

With season one heading toward its finale expect conservative firecracker Kitty to fight tooth and nail for her Iraq bound little brother Justin. I asked Calista what she thought of that storyline. She was clueless and smiled "Oh. No you know more than I do."

And speaking of clueless, little miss Salty apparently has only watched one episode of "Brothers & Sisters". She blames her Idol obsession. I blame her poor priorities. She's behind on her TIVO action-yada yada yada. "American Idol is ruling my life right now and I have no time for much else." (yawn)

She's so behind on the Walker family dysfunction she's gonna have to catch up on dvd this fall. Back to back Walker dinner table squabbles--I can't think of a better way to spend the weekend. In fact the show is at it's best during family meals. What I would do to be invited over for supper. Heck, I'd volunteer to sit at the kiddie table.
