Brooke Shields Guest Stars As 'Hannah Montana' Returns For Season Two
Somewhere inside of me is a twelve-year-old little girl trying to break out. It's because I'm not ashamed to admit I love watching the Disney Channel. Forget "Seinfeld", "Friends" or "Will & Grace" re-runs. I've seen them all. Now when there is nothing on TV, I can always count on Disney for some mindless, cute, cheesy, funny sitcoms. First, it was "That's So Raven." Then "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody." Now I get a chuckle out of watching "Hannah Montana."
It started when I visited the set, back in February, to talk to Billy Ray Cyrus about his "Dancing with the Stars" training. I loved his humble attitude towards the show, his southern charm and quick wit. I figured that would help his fan base on "Dancing," but I had no idea just how far he would get on the show thanks to his loyal "Hannah Montana" followers. He's not even the star of the show. That honor goes to his 14-year-old daughter, Miley Cyrus.. the biggest thing in pre-teen celebrities right now. For those who don't have children or who are not secretly tuning into the Disney Channel, the show revolves around Miley Stewart, her dad Robby and trouble-making brother, Jackson. Miley lives a double life as a secret teen pop sensation... aka Hannah Montana.
This week "Hannah Montana" returns for season two with a whole week of brand new episodes. In tonight's premiere episode, "Me and Rico Down by the School Yard", Miley begins as a freshman at Seaview High School and must deal with the devastating text she receives from someone claiming to know about her secret life.
Then on Friday, Brooke Shields guest stars as her mom (who on the show has passed away) in a series of dream sequences and flashbacks. We were on the set for filming as Brooke took on this kinder, softer role, "My nieces, my daughter's friends, they have no interest in anything that I do ever. Then when they heard this, they were beside themselves. I have gotten exclamation point emails and little letters 'please, please, please can I have Hannah Montana's autograph.' It is just so crazy!"
Proving she too could lead a double life, Brooke even gets the chance to sing on the show, " I know it brought my whole cool level up."
Her pipes certainly impressed Billy Ray Cyrus, "She is absolutely a fantastic singer. She's got a lot of soul. I don't know that people know that about her. She is a very soulful singer."
While Brooke's kids were giddy with excitement to meet Hannah Montana, Miley's mom had the same reaction to having Brooke on the set, "I know my mom's like obsessed with her. She was trying to act like she didn't care."
It's rare in Hollywood to find such a tight knit family unit especially one who work together on a daily basis. When Billy Ray signed on to play her dad on the show some wondered whether it was to keep an eye on her or because he loved acting. Miley says, "I think a little bit of both. I think he's trying to spy. He's been really cool though. He's really fun to work with. He knows when it's time to have space or whatever and he's not you know always overcrowding me."
With the success of the show, Miley's life now closely mirrors Hannah's in that she has become this huge star yet her family tries to keep her grounded, "They keep a close eye on me."
A star attitude or ego trip gets met with a stern warning, "I was like 'hey mom I work like an adult, why can't I act like one.' She's like 'because you live in my house. Get out if you're gonna act like that.' "
Big kudos to Billy Ray Cyrus for keeping a watchful yet not claustrophobic eye on his budding superstar, "She's very adult and very mature for her age. She makes great decisions and like on the show is what I try to be to her in real life is both her friend and her father. I look at some of these kids that left to their own devices as they get these big careers and these big massive paychecks that start rolling. I mean at some point, I can see the ones that I say somebody stopped parenting them."
Yes, I can name several of them. Just read the tabloids. It's too bad more Hollywood parents don't adopt the same attitude.
It is refreshing to see, wholesome programs. Billy Ray sounds like a great dad!
