'Lost' & Found: Sorry Charlie
by Keith Freshwater, Access production assistant
Before looking forward, let's take a brief look back at last week's episode, "Catch-22."
Some may be thinking my prognostication that “the parachutist” would have information about the 815’ers was incorrect. I thought as much after watching, but then I found a spoiler from tonight's episode that, if true, confirms my original claim. And this is a whopper of a spoiler, so big that I hesitate to even mention, but then I would be denying myself the opportunity to say, "I told you so" next week. But, I'll save that for the end.
Last week's episode, "Catch-22," once again left our office divided -- most just could not care less about Desmond. I have to admit, when I first saw Desmond as a monk, I groaned (Get it? He says "brother" all the time), but I've always liked Desmond's story, particularly the Desmond-Penny love story that has become a central plot-point to the “Lost” universe. I felt that the episode was a preface, a start to an arc that hopefully will payoff in the finale.
As far as Charlie's near-demise, who didn't get excited when he ended up on the business end of Rousseau's arrow? But what exactly was the point of Desmond saving Charlie? Has time now been altered? Or was this more insight into Desmond's character? He, like Locke once did, has lost his faith, and therefore, failed his "test." I think the ramifications of this decision will become clear in the future. Charlie's not off the chopping block yet.
I predict he'll still meet his demise in a few episodes, and it'll involve the other end of the cable on the beach.
I want to draw special attention to an Easter Egg from last week. Take a close look at the photo on Brother Campbell's desk. Not only do the monastic activities include wine making, but apparently there's a rudimentary Photoshop course as well.
Poor cutting and pasting aside, what's interesting is who's in the picture. That's Brother Campell and the mysterious Ms. Hawking, from Dessie's previous episode, "Flashes Before Your Eyes."
(Note: More character names inspired from philosophers and scientists: Joseph Campbell maybe, author of "Power of Myth," and renowned physicist, Stephen Hawkings. Science vs. Faith anyone? (Well, that's a topic for another blog.)
What does all of this mean? Is there a conspiracy to make sure Desmond winds up on the island? Expanding upon that, are there people in the real world whose very intentions are to make sure our players end up on the island?
And this goes out to Executive Producers Lindelof and Cuse, feel free to plagiarize: When Sawyer learns about the new island member, the parachutist, please, please have him quip, "Another new person? Who's going to drop out of the sky next? 'The Harlem Globetrotters'? [Thanks to my co-worker, Nick F.]
FLASHES FROM THE FUTURE (Possible spoilers from tonight's episode):
The title of "D.O.C" apparently stands for "Date of Conception." Knowing that, coupled with the fact that this is a Sun/Jin-centric episode, we can expect to get some answers about the identity of the father of Sun's baby. Definitive answers? I've been able to glean from the Web and the Official "Lost" podcast that the likely candidates are Jin, Jae Lee (the jumper [yes, he committed suicide, wasn't murdered. That's straight from the creators' mouths]) or some third mystery person. According to the “Lost” podcast, the cast was kept in the dark as well. Daniel Dae Kim and Yunjin Kim had differing ideas about the identity of the father, even up to the day of shooting. I predict we'll know who the father is tonight.
Sun will be hesitant, but allow Juliet to examine her. Remember my prediction about Sun's fate on the Island... pregnant women don't last, with the exception being Claire, but she didn't conceive on the island. If the date of conception for Sun is post-crash, she's marked. And she doesn't die tonight -- I predict she'll be gone before the end of the season. Furthermore, I imagine that Juliet will be blamed for this from the survivor camp, and we've seen what an enraged Jin is capable of...
In an effort to save the life of the fallen parachutist, Desmond employs the help of someone previously believed to be dead, someone sight-challenged, who will say, "as your friend pointed out I’ve already died once this week.”
And on to the Big One. I don't know where you come down on the whole spoiler debate, I personally don't have a problem reading spoilers, but in respect for those who dislike them, here's your opportunity to turn back now. I'm even asking that our Web team employ invisotext on this one. It turns out The Parachutist does indeed have information for the crash survivors --news that the Lostaways aren't going to like.
Are you really sure?
I mean, really, really?? (Highlight below to reveal the spoiler!)
The rumor is that in the final moments of the episode when the beach dwellers claim they arrived by way of Oceanic Air Flight 815, the parachutist says this is impossible. The wreckage of 815 had been recovered and there were no survivors! I am inclined to believe this because Access Hollywood’s inside source tells us we will learn that no one is searching for the survivors.
