Sounding Off On The Simon Scandal

Comments (3)

Last night on 'Idol', as soon as Simon Cowell was caught on camera rolling his eyes, I looked at my wife and said, "Its going to be a bad day for Simon tomorrow. He's next".

There is a poison in our society, and I can't decide if it's completely promulgated by the media or just 90%. There is an ongoing hunt for the next villain to splash across the front page and sell papers, boost ratings and further satiate peoples' lives with media.

Don Imus is breathing a little easier today.

But where the corporate entities that employed Imus bailed on him, and with enough grounds, you can bet that no matter how much the Simon "eye-roll" snowballs, Fox will back this guy to the hilt. He's the centerpiece of the biggest television sensation in history and the revenue of Idol is just too central to the corporate earnings report.

Today, an Idol producer released a statement. It reads in part:

"Simon was not reacting to Chris at that point. He had turned to speak to Paula and didn't actually hear Chris' final comments."

That feels untrue to me. Since Simon rolled the eyes after Chris had completed his comments, it felt like a reaction. But here's the thing: I think there are many people who reacted the same way as Simon. Chris Richardson was in the middle of a Cowell skewering that could likely cost him many votes. He changed the subject quite dramatically.

If you can make the argument that Simon was insensitive and thus deserves some kind of punishment, then you can also argue that it was an instinctive and innocent reaction that many felt. Remember, Simon is the guy famous for having the guts to speak what others are thinking.

The problem here lies within the hastily released press statement that, to me, feels less than genuine.

Finally, Simon is a true critic. And a true critic spends his time being "critical". He rolls his eyes all the time. Paula is a cheerleader, not a critic, so she's always fun and sweet.

This smells a little like that poison spreading. I think whoever released that press release knew it too.

I don't know why Imus is still in the news. He made a fatal mistake and now he has to suffer the consequences now we need to move forward. If Jimmy the Greek and Howard Cozell were fired for their comments which is trivial compared to what Imus said. Then it was right to fire him. Stop making excuses and trying to blame the networks and everyone else. Anyone with any "smarts" should have known better. Case Closed already!! Now him suing the networks just goes to show how sincere his apology is not. Imus, find you another cushy job and forget about being on TV or Radio.
