Who Wears Short Shorts: Is Idol's Haley the Next Nair Girl?

A light bulb came on in my head. I wondered if the company who makes Nair had thought about bringing on Haley as a spokesperson, considering how much attention her legs and shorts got on the show. So, I played investigator and tracked down a phone number for the company, Church & Dwight. I spoke with a lovely assistant telling her that I would like to speak to someone in publicity. I was pretty certain my call would not be returned. However, minutes later I get a call from someone in the marketing department, Dan Bracken. He tells me that no, it’s not something they had thought of but it's certainly interesting. Although, Nair is about to launch a brand new campaign so the timing is not good. He says he is going to talk it over, however, with the Brand Team and get back to me.

Later, I spoke to Vice President of Marketing, Women’s Health Business, Stacey Feldman and she had a great answer for me, "She certainly answered the question ‘who wears short shorts?’. And, like millions of Americans, we were captivated by her talent and spirit. And if Haley was interested in working with Nair, we would love to hear how she would like to work with us."

So, this morning armed with my quote from Stacey, I spoke to Haley. I think I offended her when I mentioned that on yesterday's conference call she didn't seem thrilled by the reporters harping about her legs, '' Well there was one question that was pretty intense but I was wearing shorts you know and that's like the whole deal. It was a costume it was fun. I was classified as a cabaret singer who was never going to get noticed so me and Art (the show's stylist) were like what am I going to do? So, he was like lets go trendy. What is everybody tending to wear right now, which is shorts. So, we did shorts with pumps and a shirt and it worked so we just kind of kept doing the trendier thing and got trendier dresses and stuff like that until I guess it just went over."

I grilled her a bit on whether it was a conscious decision to get votes to keep showing off the legs, "Well not necessarily help me get votes because I was getting votes before. I had never really gotten any great comments from Simon. So, when you get a great comment from Simon you might want to stick with it.

Unfortunately, the plan backfired on her, "Well, I figured something was going to backfire with Simon."

That's when I hit her with the good news that Nair may be interested in working with her, She was genuinely thrilled, "I would love to work with Nair, that would be amazing. So I guess the shorts did work!"

She would love to do a commercial for them but with one stipulation, "That would be awesome as long as I can still have the makeup because that's the only reason my legs looked the way they did because that makeup was genius. It’s like a bronzer. It's like the illusion of skinnier legs."

So, Nair the ball is in your court. Personally, I think it would be a great marriage. Of course, I’ll expect my ten percent when the deal goes down!
