I try to stay in my nice little world of watching and covering television. Sometimes the rare occurrence happens when I get the phone call to go and cover what I would consider a news event in the entertainment world. To me a news event is anything that involves death, drugs, divorce, disappearances... you get it.. in the world of the famous and infamous. By dedicating myself to covering shows like "Dancing with the Stars" and "American Idol", I'm pretty much assured of keeping out of the slimy side of celebrity.
This morning, I get a call from our assignment desk to travel up to Promises Malibu, the rehab facility that is currently home to Lindsay Lohan. We would be shooting stand-ups for our daily show about Michael Lohan's (Lindsay's dad) alleged claims that she had been using a fair amount of drugs in the time leading up to her accident and subsequent trip to rehab. It's the type of story I personally don't care to cover but the show needed me so I went. Plus, I'd never mind a trip to beautiful Malibu. In fact, the road leading up to the rehab center is a long winding road with breathtaking views of the ocean.

Sound the trumpets. Oscar season has begun.
True, we are only at the halfway mark in the 2007 film season. But I doubt that the names of Hilary Swank (Freedom Writers & The Reaping), Halle Berry (Perfect Stranger) and Diane Keaton (Because I Said So) will be called out on January 22, Oscar nomination morning. However, one name I would bet on (that is if I was a betting man) would be Best Supporting Actress winner Angelina Jolie.
The other night I watched A Mighty Heart (opens June 22), in which Angelina plays 5-months-pregnant journalist Mariane Pearl, wife of slain Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl. Ms. Jolie gives one of her best performances in a long time.
In the film, directed by Michael Winterbottom (Code 46) and produced by Brad Pitt, we see the trials and tribulations that Mariane goes through in order to try and find her missing husband.

Now that the 2006-2007 TV season is over, let’s fire up the ratings scoreboard and see who walks away with ratings gold. FOX gets to gloat thanks to “American Idol”.
The popular talent show was plagued this season with a rather unexciting group of contestants (sorry, Sanjaya) but enough people watched to make “Idol” the number one and number two shows for the season. Wednesday’s results show was seen by an average of 30 million viewers to take the top spot while Tuesday’s performance show was seen by an average of 29.5 million to take second.
Both of “Dancing with the Stars'” fall and spring editions (performance and results shows), “CSI,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “House,” “Desperate Housewives” and “NBC Sunday Night Football” round out the top ten shows of the season.
"Heroes" finished as the most watched new show of the season, ranking 22nd with 13.6 million viewers, followed closely by CBS's James Woods drama "Shark" at 26. ABC's "Ugly Betty" tied with medical stalwart "ER" to rank at number thirty-one, each with an average of 11 million people tuning in. The critically acclaimed but poorly watched Aaron Sorkin drama "Studio 60," which was cancelled, finished the season at 75.
This morning I left Cannes very early to catch a flight home. As we drove I noticed more examples of what is a most common trend:
Celebrities doing foreign print campaigns.
Do you recall the character played by Bill Murray in 'Lost in Translation', who pimps himself for some kind of after dinner drink brand all over Japan? Well, there's a little bit of that guy in so many of our celebs.
George Clooney on countless billboards, posing almost identically to the Bill Murray character, for Nespresso (caffeinated hot cocoa maybe?).
Clive Owen giving his best debonair for 'Hypnose' cologne.
Demi Moore for Helena Rubinstein face sculptor....
Jordin Sparks is living her dream. She came into our studio, after being crowned the new American Idol a mere 12 hours before. She was operating on 2 hours of sleep but, still elated from her journey of beating out hundreds of thousands of hopefuls.
When I met her, I sensed that there was something about her that I liked. Beyond being sweet and charismatic and adorable, she had another "spark" about her.
A sense of Divine Purpose.
She talked about what a whirlwind the last several months had been, how she had been dreaming of this day since she was 12-years-old and watching Kelly Clarkson win. She gave a heartfelt message to her parents whom she said had sacrificed so much for her. And then she sang, "This is My Now" - the song that really sealed her win on the show.

My wife arrived last night in Cannes and I feel whole again. We had a romantic dinner, many laughs a great conversation and the rest would be innapropriate to discuss.
Today we are on the beach relaxing. She is reading and I am talking. She hates it when I ramble on when she's entrenched in her pages, but that's me...an observer, social philosopher and all around restless guy.

Here at Access Hollywood, we take "Lost" very seriously -- sometimes... obsessive-compulsively (see effigy votive candle pictures, above):
General consensus on the "Flash Forward" Season 3 Finale = Darn Good.
Some random staff thoughts:
Best line of the night (Keith): Hurley: "Attention.... Others..."
Best Theory (Bryant): "AGREED AND JACK AND KATE LIED ABOUT SOMETHING MY THEORY IS THEY LEFT MANY FOLKS ON THE ISLAND AND HAVE LIED ABOUT IT...
THE GUILT IS DRIVING HIM NUTS AND KATE IS DOING HER BEST TO IGNORE IT..."
Best Moment (consensus... tie): Hurley mows down The Others in the VW van .... and, Charlie's death scene.
(Ratings news... after the jump)
3:01p.m. Just arrived at the red carpet. It's littered with former Idol contestants waiting to be interviewed on Live shows. Paris Bennett, Vonzell Solomon, Anthony Fedorov, Mikalah Gordon and Justin Guarini and Kimberly Caldwell shilling for TV Guide Channel.
3:07 Remember Ian Benardo of "Gloria, Gloria" auditioning fame this year? He and his BFF Bobby Trendy just trampled down the red carpet in the most ridiculous colorful getups complete with patent leather high heeled go go boats. Train wreck anyone?
3:15 I talk to Carmen Rasmusen from season two who tells me she has a country album coming out in two months. I swear "two months" in Idol speak is code for "sometime, maybe never".
3:20 I get a nice hug from Paris Bennett who advises this year’s Idol contestants to not give up on their dream.
3:25 Diana DeGarmo is wearing quite the scary looking dress but looks great after losing twenty pounds.
3:30 Mandisa and Paris Bennett see each other on the carpet for the first time with Mandisa telling Paris, "you look amazing!"

You may be wondering why I'm titling my blog Ocean's 8 when the name of the movie we're a hunting today is “Ocean's Thirteen”. It's really a very simple, simple answer...it's my eighth day at the festival, I've seen the ocean every single day, and my colleagues back home have been waiting with baited breathe to hear all they can about the triumvirate of gods, George, Matt and Brad.
Once again we'll be spending time at the hotel du choix for anyone who's anyone, The Hotel du Cap looking for the exclusives only Access can bring you. Personally, I'm quite excited for this, the third in a trilogy of fun Danny Ocean adventures and can't wait to hear what the gang has to say about it.
Well, it certainly was not the most exciting Finale performance show ever but it's always nice to be live inside the Kodak Theatre to catch all the action. The fans are so excited for the experience and the energy level is great even though there were no standing ovations like last year when Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee went head-to-head (at least not from any of the balconies and mezzanines).
Seconds after Jordin finished her final song; I was ushered backstage to wait in the wings for Jordin and Blake.
They both missed Chris Daughtry's performance and came backstage together just before he began. After a quick makeup touch up, Blake was upon me with a look of defeat, "I think I had fun. I think I did all right. It's kind of hard when you're up against Jordin you know and she's a bad ass vocalist."
In the end this finale may come down to the songwriting competition. While Jordin shined singing this sappy ballad, Blake did the best he could with the material, "It's definitely not my kind of style of music. So, I just had fun with it and put as much as I could into it. I made friends with the song. I shook its hand and said let's play together."
"I complained that I had no shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet".
At this moment, I cannot remember where I first read this. But, this evening, it came to mind quickly.
I had just finished doing my last interview on the dance floor of "Dancing With the Stars". The finale was this evening and it was a reunion with many of the past celebrity performers coming back to be a part of the celebration of the new champion.
It had been a long day and I was tired. I wanted to get off my feet for I had been standing in heels for a large part of the day.
I had just finished interviewing Heather Mills - a woman who has been an inspiration to so many because she took on the challenge of dancing before the country with an artificial leg.
As we concluded our interview, a man was pushing a wheelchair towards Heather. In the chair was a little girl about 8 years old. Head partially shaven. One leg.
It's here. Finally. My long "American Idol" Season Six journey is coming to a close. After a nice little break last week in New York City for the Upftonts, I have returned to my Idol beat. I'm counting the hours until its all over... but really what will I do next week?
This morning, I was inside the Kodak Theatre as the finishing touches were being put on the stage for the showdown between Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks. The theater was filled with all sorts of reporters from local Fox news outlets as technicians worked on the lights behind them. News crews were kicked out of the theater right at 8am. I was then taken across the street to interview the designers from Badgley Mischka, Mark and James. A-list stars like Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez swear by their clothes and now they will be dressing Jordin exclusively for the finale (and a few outfits tonight..) Expect gorgeous flowing gowns and some short sassy cocktail dresses tomorrow night.
Tomorrow we crescendo with the "Ocean's Thirteen" guys. Matt, George and Brad are now all here in Cannes...a sexy place to promote a sexy movie.
I saw the film today and it was fun. Better than "Ocean's Twelve" in my opinion.
Bumped into the film's producer Jerry Weintraub on the dock just before he boarded some huge yacht. He rolls like Caesar! Larger than life and with control over all the guys in the movie. "Billy, I'm gonna take care of you baby."
I'm holding my breath.

The evening arrival of Brad and Angie was nothing short of Cannesdemonium on the red carpet.
The fans were cheering, the paparazzi were snapping pictures right and left and the movie theme music was blaring. It was all you would expect from THE international film festival of the year and I’m certain Lauren and Danny back home would’ve loved it.
Meanwhile, since we’ve been on such close Brangelina watch, today it’s off to a quick 10 minute extended preview of the new Nicole Kidman flick The Golden Compass.
Also up at bat is a more extended tour of The Hotel Du Cap with newly remitted guest, Brett Ratner.
I know this topic has nothing to do with entertainment news or celebrities, but it is a story that's close to my heart, and I wanted to share it with the readers of AccesHollywood.com today.
My pastor told a story in church that I think we should all remember when we are doubting ourselves or feel that our past mistakes make us unworthy of having God's blessings.
He took out a 20-dollar bill, held it up and asked the congregation who wanted it. As expected, dozens and dozens of people gleefully raised their hands, some shouting, "I do, I do!"
Our pastor then said, "I can't guarantee where this money has been. As you can see, it's not a new bill. It's been around a long time. It could have been used to buy drugs. It may have been used to purchase stolen goods, or even a lap dance. It's old and a little dirty."
Then, he held it up again and said, "Who still wants this 20-dollar bill?"

Another day of blogging is here. By contrast to a lovely and cultural day visiting the hills of Provence in St. Paul de Vence and then Nice just outside off the madness of Cannes, I came back to La Croisette today for Brangelina watch 2007.
There I am waiting for the big arrival in a paparazzi infested madhouse, and trust me these people really are termites.
Angie’s latest flick, premiering at the festival, called "A Mighty Heart" is about reporter Daniel Pearl, who was killed in the Middle East, and is produced by Angelina’s other half, Brad.
The film is an Official Selection, but Out of Competition at this point. Does anybody out there remember the fact this role was not originally intended for Angelina? Guess who was going to be the original lead actress? Bet it won’t be that hard for you!
Brad and Angelina whipped into the center of Cannes for their press conference for "A Mighty Heart". They looked as young and sexy as ever. Brad with a reddish brown hair job and Angelina punishingly exotic and lip centric as ever.
They arrived by boat from the Hotel du Cap where their children are playing with Mariane Pearl's kid. Angelina painted a very Gatsby-esque picture of children playing by the oceanside. I do hope they are left alone on the beach and the paps aren't in boats off the coast. Of course they are, but how sad that others' privacy is your livelihood. I draw the line at circling the bandwagon.
Tim Vincent interviewed Angelina as she walked in...great 5 questions about life in Cannes, the family's plan here...just a fun quick exchange.

Yesterday was interesting to say the least. The day began with a trip to one of the hottest and most expensive hotels in Cap d'Antibbes; The Hotel du Cap, Eden Roc. Michael Douglas owns a home in this area. Celebrities known to have stayed here are everyone from Jennifer Aniston to George Clooney. Prices for suites at the hotel are estimated to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of a whopping 7,000 Euros per night. Tres expensive for this lush and beautiful beach front property where anything and every need is catered to and met with elegance and modern sophistication
We were headed there for an exclusive interview with Leo DiCaprio, but unfortunately the interview was pushed due to time constraints.
Interestingly enough if you were to head to their website, you would hear the famous music from the movie "Titanic." Leo is in town promoting his latest environmental flick and we will pick up with the interview later in the week.

Well folks, as promised we got our taste of blueberry pie when Norah Jones showed up in our lounge for an interview and we got the pics as she promoted her upcoming feature.
Meanwhile, our space on La Crosiette ROCKS. We're the premiere and only entertainment news resource in the space and the American Pavilion is thrilled to have us with them. While I was making the rounds inside, I had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Director/Producer Halfdan Hussey and his partner Nickie Zepeda of Cinequest. For those of you who don't know, part of the purpose of Cannes is not just to screen films, but also for marketers to seek out new films to distribute...and that's where Cinequest comes in.
Self-described as, "mavericks who empower the marriage of filmmakers with the technology of silicon valley", Halfdan and Nickey are seeking content that's edgy, original and from true risk takers. Check out some of what they are already up to at www.cinequest.org.

Hello and goodbye from Cannes…I arrived Tuesday after a spectacular and star-filled flight from LA. Minnie Driver sitting a few rows in front of us and then on the Heathrow to Nice leg, Jude Law who’s “My Blueberry Nights” opened the 60th Cannes Film Festival, was with us too.
Access Hollywood is doing something no show of its kind has ever undertaken, hosting virtually the entire show from the Festival. We have a bevy of producers, crews and of course talent. We all arrived and by Tuesday we were up and going.
It's the final day of the Upfronts.
This morning I had to miss the CW presentation for an appearance on MSNBC. So, I didn’t get to see their new fall offerings. Then again, I've actually never watched anything on their network (sorry," America's Next Top Model" fans). I did make it in time to catch FOX, who wrapped up the week.
Fortunately, none of my favorite shows got canned. They did announce two more seasons of "24" which is surprising considering how the ratings have fallen off. I'm 14 episodes back on my Tivo watching. I lost interest and gave up less than half way through even though I was an avid watcher for every other season. Hopefully, they will re-tool the show and infuse it with some fresh energy for next year. They also announced that "House" would get the prime slot after the Superbowl next year.
Fans of this show love it and rave about it to me. I'm finally intrigued enough to spend some cash and catch up via DVD.
Here's what's new this Fall...

Bonjour Access fans,
It's about 7:00am Cannes time and today will be my first official day here. I'm heading to the Croisette, home of the American Pavilion (the hot spot of the action for celebrity sightings and screenings) and our Access Hollywood home away from home. So what else do I have planned?
Currently, I'm combing through two different papers with CNN international on in the background. I'm reading the International Herald in English and trying to recall my days of high school French with the Nice Matin (a local French paper), doing much better than I thought I would.
Today's belle of the ball--the always stunning Juliette Binoche (pictured), one of the most famglamulous French actresses in America for her role in "Chocolat." She will be on the Croisette promoting a low budget 3 million Euros film called "Le Voyage du ballon Rouge" or "The Journey of the Red Balloon," an interpretation of a famous children's story. Never fear, Squarini is here, and if there is a picture of the belle to be had WE SHALL have it.
Day three of the Upfronts and this time it was CBS' turn to announce their new fall schedule. First of all, let me just say for the record I’m pissed that they chose to cancel "Jericho." How is it that a gripping, suspenseful, unconventional serialized drama gets the can while copycat shows like "NCIS", "Cold Case", "Without a Trace" and "Numb3rs" continue to survive?
Are the ratings really that fabulous? I mean who is watching this stuff because I cant name one person I know who does. They are the number one network so I guess someone out there is watching. I'd love to know whom.
Ok. Enough ranting about the injustice of "Jericho." Let's get to breaking down the new shows CBS wants you to watch.

So the road today was a long and hard haul because I wound up delayed at Charles de Gaulle International Airport for 5 hours. Yep, you read it right, 5 WHOLE BORING HOURS.
What a nightmare. I overheard many industry folks at the CDG airport complaining about exactly the same.
However, once I finally got over the time it took to get here and the international challenges of dealing with the airport I must admit it was well worth the trip and I haven't seen anything like these outdoor vistas before.
It's like a beach with a pulse, not laid back, no surfer bums and I haven't even been to the thick of the action yet.
Well the Europeans definitely know who Jerry Seinfeld is.
I wasn't sure how many people would show up, press wise, for his “BEE MOVIE” stunt, but it’s packed.
Jerry is doing a zip line jump off the legendary Carlton hotel, across from the beach...he will end up on a platform that jets into the water about 100 yds.
Jerry told me yesterday that he had practiced twice, was not nervous and was ready to go. Even DreamWorks Animation boss Jeffrey Katzenberg made the jump.
I hate to say it, but the slim chance of error, is what gathers the masses. Terrible to say.

The time has come peeps....I am officially sitting in a lounge in the middle of JFK waiting to leave for Cannes.
Interestingly and frankly, lamely enough, I left my boarding pass at the security check in point to pass through to the gate...that cannot be the highlight of my trip, nor will I let it get me down!
I have my passport in one hand, a book and a nano in the other and a sleeping mask/pillow ready to make the long seven plus hour journey to Paris.
Then, from Paris I fly to Nice for about an hour and chance et voila Cannes.

We LOVE LOVE MIKA! Can we just put that out there?
The British sensation played his first official LA show at the end of March at the legendary venue, The Troubadour….and yes, we’re STILL talking about it.
For those of you who want some modern day Freddie Mercury, mixed in with a little bit of Scissor Sisters, we’ve found the man for you. Everything about MIKA is outrageous and over the top. Just to give you an idea, his show included animal costumes, balloons, and performers on stilts.
But this 23-year-old has more to him than just his on stage theatrics. He has been performing since he was ten, and is a self-taught piano player, who also writes his own material. His unique sounds could be partly due to the fact that he was born in Beirut and grew up in London and Paris, and his music reflects his travels. The fabulously flamboyant entertainer has been a hit in the UK since the release of his single "Grace Kelly," which has since climbed to number one.

Fairly certain I'm the lone country music fan here at Access, I proudly plopped down, beer and popcorn in hand, to view last night's 70th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards.
First off, whatever Reba's had done (or "hasn't" had done), she's done it well. She looked amazing. The monologue wasn't much to write home about, but then again, watching a country awards show and expecting 30 Rock isn't exactly a reasonable expectation. She's Reba and we love her for her upbeat attitude and crazy grins.
The set was a little 80's-Daytime Emmys-meets-Star Search-meets, well, the ACMs. To me, this OK given the nature of the genre. MTV Moonman statue stage themes and lower-me-from-the-ceiling-in-a-flaming disco ball entertainment stylings wouldn't exactly work when you've got a guy in a cowboy hat singing about backroads and frog-giggin'"
So here are my personal highlights, in no particular order:
It's strange in television how the network with the least hype surrounding their TV lineup only picks up four new shows (NBC you know who you are), while ABC which has mega buzzed about shows like "Dancing with the Stars", "Desperate Housewives", "Lost" and "Grey's Anatomy" picks up eleven new series. Maybe it comes down to less is more. NBC renewed three of its freshman shows from last year, "Heroes", "30 Rock" and "Friday Night Lights." Three shows died a quick death. Giving NBC a 50 percent success rate. ABC rolled out ten new shows. Three survived.. "Brother's and Sisters", "Ugly Betty", "Men in Trees." Six where shown the door. One remains on mid-season life support for this year. I'll call that a 33 percent success rate. NBC wins, I guess? Who really knows what viewers want? I don't think anyone really has the magic formula. Sometimes great shows go unnoticed while marginal shows become a huge hit. Here's my take on what ABC is offering up new for next season.
Last night, we took Cannes by storm.
Right off the plane and into the old city, which is very romantic (narrow streets, outdoor tables). The food was bad but the '96 Margaux was outstanding.
This morning, I hopped up and went for a run with my Exec. Producer Rob.
This afternoon I joined the directors of Jerry Seinfeld's "Bee Movie" and watched 30 minutes of exclusive footage. Jerry's voice belongs on a bee. Just does.

Well, I have officially packed everything but the kitchen sink for my journey to Cannes tomorrow night. I can't wait to get to all the action. I flew to NY first and took an informal office poll.
My question? Who would you most like me to come back and report I saw [or snapped a pic of] while in Cannes? The breakdown:
30% George Clooney
65% Brangelina
4% Jack Nicholson
1% Michael Moore (I actually thought Nicholson was a little random.)

Friday night I hosted the New York Annual Gala for Operation Smile as I have on both coasts for 3 years running. I am on the Board Of Governors, having been asked to join a couple of years ago by the CEO and Co-founder, Dr. Bill Magee, an amazingly compassionate and selfless man. I do it for him.
Now...I have never seen so many beautiful young people in my life, certainly more than the year before. I hosted the live auction, ribbed some people, had some laughs...I had no idea I was in the middle of the new frontier of New York Socialites.
After a rough trip which included a 9O-minute wait on the tarmac after landing at JFK (isn't this illegal after the whole Jet Blue incident) I've finally made it to New York City for the Upfronts. This is where the TV Networks present their new Fall line up to advertisers.
First up was NBC. Before the presentation the stars of the new shows arrived at a red carpet style event. It's always a bit ackward to interview people you don't know on shows you have never seen. This is where I gauge who has star quality and who I could see as the next big thing. I accurately predicted success for Hayden Panettiere last year at NBC. So, I feel my track record is pretty good.
Here's my take on NBC's new shows
This morning in the local New York City paper there was a blurb about a 'Free Paris' rally in Washington Square Park.
I instantly knew I'd be attending.
Covering this type of stuff can be intellectually draining sometimes, so when it appeared there'd be a chance to engage, debate and perhaps spar with some Paris loyals, I had to seize it.
I am just leaving now as dejected and empty as ever. There were more photographers and video bloggers than "activists" at this event. Three people can't constitute a rally, can they? In short, the cause didn't gain much traction.
And then there were three. It's down to Melinda Doolittle, Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis. This is exactly how I picked it in the office American Idol pool. Only two of us remain in the running. I have Melinda to win and the other person has Jordin to win. Personally, I think it could either way. I never in a million years expected LaKisha Jones to get this far. Who was voting for her? She could not have a bigger fan base than Chris Richardson and certainly not Sanjaya. Yet, somehow she stuck around each and every week despite never quite living up to that very first week when she nailed "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going."
So, what happened since Top 24 week (when she sang that song) that her true potential never came through. In a conference call with reporters this morning LaKisha said her downfall was having to sing different genres each week, "I think I did the best with what I was given."

Welcome to week 2 of my blog. We’re halfway through sweeps and ratings are up, which is no surprise as there is certainly no shortage of big stories to cover. The David Hasselhoff and Pamela Bach debacle is a stunner.
The disturbing tape of a wrecked David Hasselhoff makes its way to all the shows … of course all the shows air the tape. All the shows call it exclusive, except Access Hollywood, which brings me to … what is exclusive?
I'm just boarding a flight to NYC. I am flying on Jet Blue....it's got the satellite TV and it's 10 traffic free minutes from my office...it makes more sense than going to LAX for a fancy seat that reclines (almost) all the way. There is another important benefit:
The company appreciates the lower cost of my ticket and you never know when you might need to draw upon a little good will....so it's good to bank some when you can.
Finally, the former Chairman of Disney, and guy who could afford his own private charter to New York, is on my flight.

Three. Episodes. Left.
Everything I've been reading about the coming episodes indicates that the current momentum ain't stopping anytime soon.
Before looking forward at tonight's episode, I want to take a moment to thank ABC for making, as far as I can tell, an unprecedented decision this week: Giving "Lost" an end date.
This is a huge relief for those of us (myself included) who began to doubt we would ever get answers. ABC announced that "Lost" be wrapped up in 48 episodes over the next three seasons, ending in 2010. Outside of the mini-series concept, I can't think of an American TV show that has been given a limited run. The simplified rise and fall of a show goes like this: A new show, for whatever reason, is a hit, making record ratings, thereby driving up ad sales; networks continue to order a series as long as people continue to tune in; the show is milked dry of everything that make it interesting & enjoyable; fans tune out; ad revenues drop & THEN the shows are axed.
"Lost" isn't built like your typical serialized drama, like "Grey's Anatomy," where as long as the viewer numbers are high, new doctors, patients, problems can be brought in and the show can continue indefinitely. "Lost" needs a finite end, real answers to the questions that have been raised since Episode One. Otherwise, it would be doomed to a demise along the lines of "The X-Files," which in my opinion, went out w/ a whimper.
So thank you, ABC, for taking a chance with this show. Now don't welch on the promise.
by Jaclyn Smith, "Shear Genius" host
I was kind of disappointed with the Day to Night challenge. A lot of the day looks should have been night looks and vice versa. Less is always more in an elegant night look -- the stylists often got too complicated with their night styles and the models couldn’t execute them in the given time.
I was surprised that they didn’t make it easier, but I think they all wanted to make a statement for the night. Ben should have layered the hair more although he did do wonders for his model’s fine hair. His transition was the best for me and I loved his night style.

Anyone sick and tired of being asked to "vote for your favorite" stand up and be counted. Ok now to be fair I actually rarely exercise my right to vote on TV. I felt bad for Billy Ray Cyrus after judge Bruno called his first dance "crap" but couldn't muster up enough sympathy to vote. I tried dialing up for Melinda Doolittle several times last night after "American Idol" but alas, could not get through. After two busy signals I gave up.
I did however successfully vote in the last presidential election. No busy signals there. It's sad that there were more votes cast at last years Idol finale than our 2004 election. Maybe if the Idol Executive Producers, Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick, were brought in to produce a results show more people would step up and perform their civic duty. Forget Tom Brokaw or Katie Couric's marathon coverage on election night. Maybe a one-hour results show with musical performances, dancing celebrities and a final last minute jaw-dropping, nail-biting reveal is just what this country needs. Ryan Seacrest could host it.

With apologies to my wife, Robin, and her husband, Michael, I have to say - I love Maureen McCormick.
If there is a nicer, sweeter, more open and honest person in Hollywood then Maureen, I've yet to meet her. At this point I should also add this disclaimer; Maureen is my neighbor, has been for many years. Our kids went to summer day camp together. My oldest daughter, Jenna, used to baby-sit her daughter, Natalie, who's now 17.
In years past Maureen would walk the neighborhood on the 3rd of July, placing small American flags on everyone's lawn so we'd have a flag on display for the 4th.
Yesterday, I was with Billy as she put him through one of her kick boxing exercise routines. And yes, she kicked butt. Maureen has been in the news a lot lately, admitting that she had once been bulimic and, for a time, a cocaine user.

Remember in high school when you finally confided your secret crush to a friend and by the end of the day, the student body had the two of you as long time lovers ready to walk down the aisle?
Fun, right?
Well sadly, Hollywood is much like high school in that regard -- it's amazing how fast rumors and false reports can spread and Friday's "report" that Jay-Z was killed in a plane crash is a prime example.
Hearing the news of anyone's demise is heart wrenching, but as a huge hip hop fan who appreciates the contributions Shawn Carter has brought to the industry, it was extremely saddening.
Of course, we all know now that Jay-Z is alive and well. So with that, it's time to take a closer look at the anatomy of a rumor…
10:55 a.m. - (West Coast time) - TMZ.com posts a story saying that a small plane carrying three passengers went down in the Smoky Mountains near Asheville, North Carolina and according to rumors that were "swirling," one of the passengers was the rap impresario himself.
Quickly, the Access Hollywood news room responds and calls are made to Jay-Z's publicists, record label, manager and even personnel at his NYC club 40/40 personnel trying to verify if it is true.
It is hard not to be pleased with the Paris Hilton sentencing of 45 days in county jail. Let it be submitted that It is wrong to derive pleasure from someone else's penalty, especially if you believe that God is always watching and rejects jealousy and vindictiveness.
But my sense of relief stems from this:
I have three young daughters and its important to me that they learn about consequences. Paris has created a high profile for herself and somewhere along the way it seems an aura of invincibilty crept in. She is surrounded by sycophants, parents included, who are quick to defend and slow to reason. Accountabilty is for others. They say she's a victim of her own high profile, and that she was and has for a long time been singled out by law enforcement because she's 'Paris'.
Hmmmm.
I think it will be hard to convince people into feeling badly for her stake in life..and they might if she was even partly known for good deeds of any kind.

I always have the best of intentions but it seems more times than not my big mouth always gets me into trouble. Thursday night I had the enviable position of interviewing Phil Stacey and Chris Richardson on our Access Hollywood stage. All was going well, despite the fact that these poor guys had been up since 3am and it was now after 7pm. We had to wait for them to finish taping both "The Tonight Show" and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." They arrived with quite the entourage of family members including Phil's adorable 8-month-old daughter, McKayla. As if Chris isn't cute enough, while Phil was warming up his pipes for his performance, Chris was holding onto and playing with McKayla on his lap. I sent our photographer over to snap some photos of them together because I knew my friends would be kicking themselves for not coming to watch.
They all wanted to come over but because of the late time, everyone had plans. The girls go crazy for Chris around here but really it's my gay friends who are constantly asking me about whether or not he's cute in person and what I think of him. So, while Phil is singing "I Could Not Ask for More" (he sounded great!) I start texting my friends to tell them how cute Chris is with the baby and they are missing it. This sets off an entire funny email chain which is too private for print. Needless to say it made me laugh how big of a gay fan base Chris has. While there have been some jokes about the close friendship about Blake Lewis and Chris Richardson (affectionately nicknamed Cake) I absolutely believe that Chris is 100 percent straight. He's been spotted out and about with the likes of Lindsay Lohan and MTV's Lauren Conrad. He worked at Hooter's for goodness sake and had a girlfriend for 3 1/2 years. So, it was with love for my gay friends and no hidden motive when I asked Chris during our interview if he was surprised that he had such a huge fan base. I was not implying anything. I simply thought it was sweet that besides teenage girls and young women, Chris was getting votes from a lot of men in the gay community. He chuckled and by all means did not seem upset when he replied, "I'm not surprised by anything at this stage in the game. I just, I appreciate anybody who's a fan of what it is I do. It doesn't matter. However you choose to live your lifestyle I respect it, I think it's great you know."

I’ve been privileged to cover the coming and goings in Hollywood for 11 years and I still love the action as much today as I did back in 1996 when Access Hollywood debuted and I was the weekend show producer. From Brad and Jen to Brad and Angelina and from Tom and Nicole to Tom and Katie, I thought I had seen it all, but I hadn’t.
What’s going on with stars and their marriages….It’s common to have break ups galore, but things are now way out of control.
Now it’s not if, but it’s when for a high profile couple to call it quits. Most use the lame excuse that they have busy schedules, pressure, yada..yada..yada..and other publicist speak. The reality is, as some of the favorite tabs say, “Stars, they are just like us.” They get divorced and get divorced a lot.
But where stars and non pros differ, is in the publicizing of marital problems. It’s bad enough that the world knows…it gets worse when both parties are just out of control.

They sure do love Chris around Access Hollywood. Every time his name comes up, someone is always telling me how cute he is. The good news is... he's single. The bad new for many of my friends is... he's straight. Not that there is anything wrong with that. All season long he's been compared to Justin Timberlake in looks, sound and popularity with the ladies in Hollywood. He was spotted out and about with Lindsay Lohan and seen getting cozy with MTV reality girl, Lauren Conrad. This prompted the tabloids to claim they were a couple.
In a conference call with reporters this morning Chris set the record straight, "You know what, I just got out of a 3 ½ year relationship back home. All the other rumors and stuff are just rumors. Those people are just my friends. They are acquaintances. I'm single but still respect the fact that I just got out of a relationship with my girlfriend."

Now that he has been voted off of "American Idol", Phil Stacey's future is up in the air. Speaking to reporters on a conference call this morning, Phil explained to me when I asked whether or not he is going on tour, "My primary responsibility is to the U.S. Navy. The possibility exists that they will need me for a mission."
He will have to await the final decision but did tell me he's hopeful right now it will work out, "The last that I spoke with my commanding officer it was looking good for me to be able to go. So, I’m not really worried about it at this point. It would break my heart not to be able to go on tour but what’s important is that I fulfill my responsibility to the Navy."

Last week I said I wanted the opportunity to say, "I told you so." Be careful what you wish for, I guess, 'cause after spoiling so much, I don't really feel like being so smug. Apparently my predictions were a little too on, according to coworkers. So I'm going to reign in the spoiler info. Expect no invisotext, dialogue, or otherwise overt clues.
Tonight's episode, "The Brig," allegedly will give the answer to a question raised all the way back in Season One. I won't dare say which question other than to say I believe two of the 815 survivors will finally learn they are connected...the only hint I'll give is that it involves this letter (pictured above).
It's a prediction I called a full two seasons ago after episode 1.19, "Deus Ex Machina" . If I'm not mistaken, this will be the first time any of the survivors will learn they're connected.
So, while I was at home resting my injured shoulder and watching "American Idol" from my couch... wincing more at Jordin Sparks misstep last night then from my own pain... My friend and Access Hollywood producer, Bryant Huddleston, was having a strange encounter with Idol judge Paula Abdul.
As I've mentioned before, "Dancing with the Stars" and Idol tape at the same studio. They overlap on Tuesday nights. Just behind the CBS studio where both shows tape is a popular outdoor mall called The Grove that has lots of restaurants.
After each of the shows wrap many of the audience members, show staff and press will go grab a bite to eat. This is where Paula and Bryant collided.
Here is his own personal account of what went down...

"Hey Larry, would you take the garbage out?"
Welcome home, Larry Birkhead. Judy Birkhead's request to her brother (or was it an order?) signaled a much neededreturn to normalcy for a man who has spent the past 6 months telling the world he was, indeed, the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby, and three months battling in the Bahamian courts to take her home.
The legal wrangling, the relentless media pursuit, it was, at least for now, all behind him. Larry, physically and emotionally drained, was happy to be surrounded by the people he loved, surrounded by people overjoyed to have the newest Birkhead family member home. Dannielynnn sat contentedly on her father's lap as the Birkhead clan - sister, brother, parents, niece and nephews - gathered in a family room, chatting about the events of the past, the challenges that lay ahead and the love and support they have for each other.
Most of the talk was upbeat, happy. This was no time for negativity.
Dinner was incredibly routine. A big pot of spaghetti on one burner, meat sauce on the other, hot bread and a bowl of salad on the center island. It was a strictly help yourself affair. Everyone picking up his or her own plate, digging in, then finding a seat wherever most comfortable. Conversation was, again, casual. No whispering, no secrets to spill, just plain ordinary dinner talk.

I've been dealing with a bizarre shoulder injury, my arm is in a sling and it's hard to type. Hence no blogs for a few days. Normally, I write about other people. Today, I'm writing mostly about myself. People always ask me how I got into this business and this story about myself and Sharon Osbourne gives a little snapshot of how luck, chance and meeting the right people is all part of showbiz. Plus, read on and I'll reply to some of the comments that have been made on my blogs.
I heard that Sharon Osbourne would be replacing Brandy as a judge on "America's Got Talent", I thought to myself finally this show will get some edginess to it. Turns out I was right. On day one of taping, Sharon stormed out of the studio.(more on that later) Brandy was like the Paula Abdul of AGT. Her demeanor was sweet and nurturing in contrast to British judge, Piers Morgan who's upfront honesty made him the Simon Cowell of the show. Meanwhile, David Hasselhoff filled the middle of the road role of Randy Jackson. Why do these judge fueled shows always have to try and stick with the same formula? Oh, I know why. This talent show just happens to be executive produced by Simon Cowell. Sharon and Simon are friends. Together they are judges on England's ITV show, "The X Factor", Executive Produced by you guessed it, Simon Cowell. When does this man sleep?
I think the most beautiful thing about a woman is being self-confident. Being able to walk into a room as if you own it. For me, Jane Fonda IS that woman.
She sashayed into our junket room just as self-confident as she has always been. Never mind that the airline just lost her luggage full of clothes that she was going to wear doing a round of interviews promoting her new film, "Georgia Rule" co-starring Lindsay Lohan and Felicity Huffman.
She still looked good. All 69 years of her.
I asked her if she gave the airline a piece of her mind. In true Jane Fonda fashion, she said, "No, I was so tired, I didn't have enough mind to give them."
Jane plays a small town mom struggling to keep everyone together as terrible family secrets slowly reveal themselves. She's candid and says she knows first-hand about family dysfunction.
The conversation eventually turns to the reported bad behavior of Lindsay Lohan during filming on the set. Jane says she offered Lindsay emotional support but says the young starlet wasn't in a place where she wanted it, so Jane didn't push.
