A 'Dancing' Inspiration
"I complained that I had no shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet".
At this moment, I cannot remember where I first read this. But, this evening, it came to mind quickly.
I had just finished doing my last interview on the dance floor of "Dancing With the Stars". The finale was this evening and it was a reunion with many of the past celebrity performers coming back to be a part of the celebration of the new champion.
It had been a long day and I was tired. I wanted to get off my feet for I had been standing in heels for a large part of the day.
I had just finished interviewing Heather Mills - a woman who has been an inspiration to so many because she took on the challenge of dancing before the country with an artificial leg.
As we concluded our interview, a man was pushing a wheelchair towards Heather. In the chair was a little girl about 8 years old. Head partially shaven. One leg.
Heather stopped to speak with the little girl for a few minutes and afterwards, the man, who I presumed was her father, pushed the little girl away.
I asked Heather who the little girl was. She told me the girl was someone whom she had been mentoring for awhile. The girl had bone cancer and had to have one of her legs removed. Heather added that, according to doctors, the little girl only has a few months to live.
As my heart started to sink, Heather told me something very beautiful. She said after the little girl had her leg removed, she really didn't believe she could do anything physical. But, after she saw Heather on "Dancing With the Stars" - someone who, like her, had only one leg, the girl decided she wanted to be a dancer. And everyone believes she will be.
My lesson in this story is, instead of lamenting about situations that are small, look for ways that we can be an inspiration to others.
There is always someone who is worse off and would rather be in your shoes.
