A Real Life 'Mean Girls'

Friday night I hosted the New York Annual Gala for Operation Smile as I have on both coasts for 3 years running. I am on the Board Of Governors, having been asked to join a couple of years ago by the CEO and Co-founder, Dr. Bill Magee, an amazingly compassionate and selfless man. I do it for him.

Now...I have never seen so many beautiful young people in my life, certainly more than the year before. I hosted the live auction, ribbed some people, had some laughs...I had no idea I was in the middle of the new frontier of New York Socialites.

I am now on the plane and just read the cover story of the current New York Magazine...it features the outing of 'SocialiteRank', a web blog similar to PerezHilton.com, that wreaked havoc on the young wealthy daughters of tycoons and barons.... by continuously ranking them in 'it' type categories. It has since gone offline, but if you've seen the movie 'Mean Girls', apparently the site, fueled that kind of rivalry, because the girls couldn't help but read, email in, and compete. I get the feeling that many tears have been shed.

Newspaper gossip is hurtful, but some of them do research and follow-up.

Blog gossip has no fact checking... It's just boundless and brutal.

Last night, most the girls I read about in this article, all the fillies in the race, were there. And most were at my table. Rather, I was at theirs. With last names like Hearst, Mortimer, Wohl, these girls are the center of the scene. I had no idea I was sitting in a lioness' den. Naomi Campbell co-hosted with me...did she know?

I cover huge stars every day on Access Hollywood. I think these girls assumed I knew them.... because in this microcosm, they are BIG stars. If not for the chance reading of this article, I'd still have no clue.

The irony of all of this to me is that a charity event is designed to raise money and awareness for those less fortunate. I do not mean to suggest it doesn't because many of these girls have caring hearts and are helping. But at the same time, in New York, charity raises awareness.... of the VERY fortunate too.

I can't believe I was so naïve about all that last night.
