Cannes' Topless Beach Etiquette
My wife arrived last night in Cannes and I feel whole again. We had a romantic dinner, many laughs a great conversation and the rest would be innapropriate to discuss.
Today we are on the beach relaxing. She is reading and I am talking. She hates it when I ramble on when she's entrenched in her pages, but that's me...an observer, social philosopher and all around restless guy.
Toplessness on the beach over here is a form of sunbathing. It is not a way of life. Women don't play Kadeema ball bare breasted; they make sure tan lines don't exist with the evening wear. When a woman gets up off her beach chair, she makes sure the top is fastened. They don't swim topless.
American guys (other than me) gawk at topless women. To us, breasts are forbidden and a sighting is almost always earned. European guys are mostly immune to the topless bather....seems sad doesn't it? However, I do have this hunch that they know when an American woman has slipped off her top and tried to blend in. She gives off a subtle air of unease and it's whiffed out of the air by a Frenchman and he is there in a second, ready to inspect. The white, sun deprived region is his dead give away.
It's issues like this that keep my wife from attempting the risky move. Maybe tomorrow we go to the public beach...she takes off her top and I wear a thong and we keep our mouths shut (me too somehow) so as not to reveal the roots.

Billie - I laughed when you wrote about you talking while your wife is trying to read! I talk while my husband is reading and it drives him crazy! I'm glad I am not the only one!
