My Sharon Osbourne Reunion
![]()
I've been dealing with a bizarre shoulder injury, my arm is in a sling and it's hard to type. Hence no blogs for a few days. Normally, I write about other people. Today, I'm writing mostly about myself. People always ask me how I got into this business and this story about myself and Sharon Osbourne gives a little snapshot of how luck, chance and meeting the right people is all part of showbiz. Plus, read on and I'll reply to some of the comments that have been made on my blogs.
I heard that Sharon Osbourne would be replacing Brandy as a judge on "America's Got Talent", I thought to myself finally this show will get some edginess to it. Turns out I was right. On day one of taping, Sharon stormed out of the studio.(more on that later) Brandy was like the Paula Abdul of AGT. Her demeanor was sweet and nurturing in contrast to British judge, Piers Morgan who's upfront honesty made him the Simon Cowell of the show. Meanwhile, David Hasselhoff filled the middle of the road role of Randy Jackson. Why do these judge fueled shows always have to try and stick with the same formula? Oh, I know why. This talent show just happens to be executive produced by Simon Cowell. Sharon and Simon are friends. Together they are judges on England's ITV show, "The X Factor", Executive Produced by you guessed it, Simon Cowell. When does this man sleep?
Anyway, I was excited to see Sharon. I haven't seen her since Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party two years ago. It was Sharon who brought me back to LA after nearly four years working in New York City. I was out in LA for the Oscars. This was the year that the war first began in Iraq and the Oscars were rightfully toned down. So, I found myself with a bit more free time and ended up covering Sharon and Elton John's charity party held at the Osbourne's Beverly Hills home. Yes, that house. The one from the MTV reality show, "The Osbournes." I'd never been to the house and even though I wasn't a watcher of the show, I sure knew about it. There were all sorts of famous people and industry heavyweights milling about the party. When my work was done and we finished our interviews (and with nowhere left to go but my lonely hotel room), I wound up sticking around the party. A woman approached me and told me that Sharon really liked the interview and would I be interested in speaking to them about her just announced talk show, "The Sharon Osbourne Show. " I loved Sharon's spunk and honesty, as I tend to have a big mouth that gets me in trouble as well. So, it seemed like a perfect fit.
They happened to be conducting interviews with Sharon and the executives involved with the show, the day before I was scheduled to fly back to New York. When I walked into the room Sharon was sitting, legs crossed Indian style with her dog Minnie in a room of about four other women. They grilled me about who I knew in the industry, what I wanted to do and why I thought Sharon's show could be a success. Mostly we ended up gossiping about publicists and their clients which normally would be a big no-no.
For me it worked. A week or so later, I was hired. I moved my whole life out to California to work on this show. Unfortunately, about a month into it, I knew the show was headed for disaster. Publicists all over town were too afraid to book their clients on an unproven show with a host known for swearing and speaking her mind. All the things I loved about the Sharon would eventually sink her show. I chose to leave to start another new project about three months later and went and explained to Sharon why. She forgave me and understood. A year later, after the show was cancelled was when I ran into her and she enveloped me in her arms and tears welled up as we talked about the reasons why the show failed... many of them having nothing to do with her.
That's the Sharon I know. Warm, sincere and sweet with a side helping of total honesty. So, it it was no surprise to me when I saw her backstage at AGT that she remembered me two years later and gave me the same warm greeting. I asked her why she decided to take this job and with a straight face not hint of sarcasm at all she replied, "Oh for the money." Yep, that's my gal!
As for her role as judge on the show, expect the unexpected with Sharon, "Put it this way, I like to be fair. I like to be fair because somebody's always got something good about them and I like to remind people of that. As well as telling them what's not good about them, it kind of eases the blow somehow. "
Sharon tells it like it is to the adults but tends to be fiercely protective of acts that feature children, knowing full well how tough the business can be on them, "Being a mom.. when kids, they're very influenced by what they see on TV and my kids, I want to be a pop singer, I want to be a dancer. You know it influences kids and they all have dreams and you don't want to burst their bubble."
During the taping of the Dallas auditions, Sharon came to blows with Piers over a young singer whom he accused of copying last season's winner Bianca Ryan, " Oh dear. Piers Morgan was spouting off to this little girl. She was 11 or 12 and I just thought it was inappropriate and I didn't want to be a part of it. So, I just packed up my little mic pack and left. I went into my dressing room. I had you know a cold drink and I sat there and I just thought "be professional." Counted to 10 and just came out and said the way I felt."
As for those of you who have commented on my grammatical errors on my blogs, I'll say this.. I was not an English major. I was a Radio Television and Film major at Temple University, which means I learned to produce and write for television not print. I prefer writing in blog style rather than article style simply because it gets me around having to have perfect grammar. I also am doing two jobs at once. Besides writing and shooting stories for the internet, I also have to work on the regular daily "Access Hollywood" show. So, my time is limited and I just try to get the information out as best I can. Besides, isn't this what spell check does? I kid. I kid. I'll work on it. Maybe a refresher English class at the Valley College is in the cards for me. I know our research department would be grateful.
I'd also like to address the comments some have made in other blogs about my lack of knowledge of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein song, "You'll Never Walk Alone" that Jordin Sparks sang during inspirational. All I have to say about this is.. thank you for reminding me that I'm still young. In this town of beauty and perfection most of us are doing double takes in the mirror over every imperfection. So, it can make you feel very old. People complaining over my lack of knowledge about a song from the '40s reminded me that I'm still a young whipper snapper.
