Why Phil Stacey may skip the Idol Tour
![]()
Now that he has been voted off of "American Idol", Phil Stacey's future is up in the air. Speaking to reporters on a conference call this morning, Phil explained to me when I asked whether or not he is going on tour, "My primary responsibility is to the U.S. Navy. The possibility exists that they will need me for a mission."
He will have to await the final decision but did tell me he's hopeful right now it will work out, "The last that I spoke with my commanding officer it was looking good for me to be able to go. So, I’m not really worried about it at this point. It would break my heart not to be able to go on tour but what’s important is that I fulfill my responsibility to the Navy."
If he does go on tour expect for him to go the patriotic route with his song choices, "You know, the 'Idol Gives Back' thing has really changed my life and I think that one thing that I want to do is be a positive role model. As a Navy guy, I'd like to do something patriotic like "God Bless the USA."
It seems he can not make a single step without their approval. During the conference call, Phil ducked out for a few minutes explaining he had to take an emergency call from his Naval command. When he returned he explained that, "The Navy is giving me legal clearance to participate in this week's media events."
When asked by a reporter from The Navy Times if he has plans to leave the Navy, he assured him that he plans fulfill his commitment (which takes him until October 2008) but did add, "this could change depending on the circumstances that come my way." His position as a Naval singer takes him around the country singing at High Schools and this apparently is raising some security concerns with the Navy (thinking screaming kids) which may affect his position.
Phil's run on the show was at times shaky with many media folks predicting week-after-week he would be voted out. When country week rolled around his fate changed and is most likely what spared him, "I wanted to win but there is a taste of goodness in the midst of this because I have had a good past few weeks. So, I was able to go out on a high note."
If an album is in the cards most likely he will stick with what works best for him, "Definitely the music that I write is country music and gospel music. I don't know which path God will put me on but definitely I'll follow the door that's been open for me."
Phil, I was very very upset you got voted off. I voted for you 15 times each week. I have no doubt you will have a record deal and will be very successful. Give our beautiful wife and 2 daughters a huge hug for me, God will give you and your family a good road and i pray for you and your family. Good luck in all you do. And believe me when i say i will be there to buy your CD when it comes out. God Bless and be safe. Bonnie
