Day One With The Stars Of NBC
This is the week when the networks get together for the Television Critics Association's (TCA) annual gathering in LA.
The networks make all their announcements about the new Fall season and hype up their new shows. Every year Access Hollywood sends me to interview the new stars and to help promote returning ones. NBC is always the longest two days. Today I did twelve interviews back to back. Tommorow I have got twenty-six! I like doing interviews but its tough not to burn out.
Let me just give you a snapshot of two days in the life of a very talked out entertainment reporter.
Day One today...
12:45. Jerome Bettis and Tiki Barber from "Football Night in America" are up first. Bettis gives me a nice big bear hug and he and I talk Pittsburgh which is my hometown and he of course is a retired Steeler. He invites me to check out his restaurant when I'm in the burgh next week visiting family.
1:00 Damian Lewis, the star of NBC's new dramedy "Life" about a cop who is wrongly convicted and goes to prison for twelve years only to be exonerated of the crime in 2007. He doesn't like when I mention the show seems like "House" meets "Law & Order". I try to explain its because his character, Charlie Crews is odd and quirky yet slighty quirky like the good doc. Not buying it. The interview goes down hill from here.
1:15 The legendary John Madden sits down to talk about "Sunday Night Football". While most men would give their right foot to spend ten minutes with the man, I'm lost for what to talk about with him. He does perk up when I ask if he stills loves what he does.
1:45 Adam Arkin is surprisingly funny. He's got a supporting role in "Life". Part of his deal was that he got to also direct some episodes. Apparently, he has racked up quite a resume of directing TV, including two episodes of "Grey's Anatomy.". He says he never saw tension between the cast when he was on set.
2:00 More "Football Night in America" folks. They do know this Access Holllywood right? This time its Bob Costas and Chris Collinsworth who are just sweet as can be. I'm talked out about football though.
2:15 Another legend, sportscaster, Al Michaels. Again I'm thinking men woud kill for this opportunity while I'm dreading what we will talk about for eight minutes. He did reveal that Faith Hill will sing the song for "Sunday Night Football's" opening theme this year.
2:30 Some nice comic relief from "Saturday Night Live's" Seth Meyers who had me and the crew cracking up.
3:00 Another "Sunday Night Football" person. Make it stop!
3:45 The adorable but unknown Sarah Shahi from "Life" saunters in. She reminds me of Eva Longoria, a comparison she gets a lot and doesn't mind. This girl is definetly one to watch in the future. Her real name is nuts - Aahoo Jahansouzshahi. She has me rolling on the floor when she says her dream was to change her first name to Vickie from "Small Wonder". You know that show about a girl who is a robot.
4:00. Three interviews left. Tina Fey from "30 Rock" comes in. Her hair/makeup girls futzs with her. This surprises me as she doesn't seem like the type of woman who would want nor need that. She talks about being excited to have Jerry Seinfeld play himself in the season two opener. When I ask about Alec Baldwin boldly proclaiming he didn't want to be on the show anymore, publicists start wrapping me frantically in the background. Then I hit her with a question about whether or not they will write Tracy Morgan's ankle monitoring bracelet (stemming from a DUI) into the show. Publicists arms start flailing. They are pissed! Hey, you gotta ask. It's a legitimate question.
4:15. John Krasinki. Let's talk about this guy. He is by far the best thing on "The Office". He's so likeable that everyone in Hollywood wants to work with him. He just wrapped filming "Leatherheads" with George Clooney and Renee Zellwegger. He's got great everyman appeal. He could be the next Tom Hanks. Have I talked him up enough? Now, the bad news. Poor kid needs a stylist. That signature grey sweater, tie, puma sneakers look he is rocking has got to go. Love you though, John.
4:45 Jason Lee and the executive producer of "My Name is Earl" are the final interview of the day. Thank goodness. An assistant to one of the NBC executives has been observing all day. I put her in the hot seat and let her take a stab at doing an interview. She does a good job, though clearly nervous. Jason let's the EP talk the whole time which I find frustrating.
5:00 That's a wrap on day one.
