The World According To Sledge: Live From The MTV VMAs

by Mike Marson, Access Hollywood Supervising Producer

My assignment: to be Access Hollywood's lone eyewitness sitting inside the Palms Hotel “VMA” venue to report on what really was happening during the show... after the letdown of watching Britney [which you all probably saw better at home thanks to the close-ups and many cameras], I settled in to my not-so-great seat for what I felt was a hit-and-miss show... one of the hits: Alicia's performance -- but wait, why is everybody looking away from Miss Keys? ... perhaps a surprise guest!!! Could it be Michael Jackson is entering from the wings?... Nope, Alicia kept singing solo, and the attention returned to her... then came the mumbling, the whispers, very similar to how word travels on a schoolyard ... fight? Did you see that? Who was it?... Though we couldn't see it from our angle, Jamie Foxx confirms it on air... now it's time to leap into action, bye bye cheap seats, hello roving detective...

... using my best 'I'm ok to go through' face, I make it down level by level to the floor where it happened, and settle in behind Ashanti and Mel B ... during breaks I casually ask a cocktail waitress and some other workers what they saw... and of course, just like most incidents, everybody saw it a little differently... Tommy threw the first punch... no, Kid threw the first punch... now here's the best part [for me personally, anyway] ....after finishing frantically e-mailing the office with every tidbit so we can get the most complete possible story on our web site immediately, it finally sinks in that I, a mere mortal, am sitting amongst the greatest names in music... Hey Diddy, wassup?... no doubt a moment to savor, then right on cue, out pops Justin singing 'Love Stoned', not 10 feet from me .... life is good indeed... time to frantically e-mail my daughters and brag about being exactly where they wish they were.... then, 'poof', it's over ... but wait, I just got here!

I honestly think this was a bad move on this end - a broken heel that made her stumble on stage, and heard that she was drinking before getting on stage - not sure if was true or not -

Heel spiel. That shoe thing has already been debunked about 5 million times. Let it go already. If Britney wants to learn how to perform wearing heels, she might want to ask Tina Turner - who consistently tore up the stage wearing heels. If Britney wants to know how to resurrect a career after a divorce, she might want to ask Tina Turner. But she won't. Reports on Britney have her thinking that she's so big that she can do anything & everything & continue to get away with it. She just intentionally skated a performance - and you people continue to make excuses for her. Pathetic.
