Blog #1: Marlee Matlin's "Get Fit" Challenge
By Marlee Matlin
Greetings. First I want to thank Access and my family and friends for all their support.
Now's here the skinny on my desire to be "skinny." First, I want everyone to know that I am not planning on starving myself or get super thin. For someone who's 5'3", 129 isn't that bad. But I've been thinner and more comfortable with my body.
First, the goal here is to eat healthier, to exercise on a daily basis (this working mom of four just can't seem to find the time!) and to do my body a favor and in general, help myself develop the tools for living a healthy lifestyle that can accommodate my schedule. At the end of the day, it's not so much about me being overweight as is it that I'm just out of shape. Right now, I'm looking to lose a few pounds and remold my body so that I'm toned and muscular. I know I can do it because I used to have it before I had four children.
You know that feeling where you can wear whatever you want and not feel self conscious? That's what I'm looking to get back. I remember how great I felt back then and I just want some of that feeling back. It's about getting into that sleeveless dress, that short skirt or that bikini (I'm not holding my breath on the bikini but everyone says I can!).
Anyway, enough with the blabbering -- it's time to get up and work on getting on the new me (which is the old me before kids). Let's go!
Day 1: Harley's work out was tough but I'd worked out in the past, so I wasn't completely thrown off guard. What I loved it that he made it simple and easy to understand. I have to say that the next day I was a bit sore and the day after that, I was even more sore, especially my hamstrings. But it's true you can't have gain without a little pain. Note to Harley: I said a LITTLE! :o)
Harley's food advice was great too. I know that I've said that the junk food is there because the kids ask for it; it's what my kids like to eat. But as Harley said, why should I give junk to my kids at all? So now I'm beginning to learn to go from 2% milk to 1% to non-fat. I've learned that sugary sweets aren't the best way to satisfy a sweet tooth. And most importantly, I'VE got to get on track and eat healthier; which includes not skipping meals, a big no no according to Harley. In order to fuel weight loss, the body needs fuel. So it's time to get eating healthy and wisely.
Hi Marlee,
Good for you.
I work in health care and I am an avid sports (exercise) nut. I picked up on something you said. I think your focus does not need to be on the poundage you loose because muscle is heavier then fat, so focus on body fat % and inches, this is a better focus. You may get discouraged when you increase your muscle mass which will not necessarily drop the 30 lbs. Woman and weights along with cardio and relaxation (stretching) awesome. Expert health professionals say, exercise, balanced eating, meditation and sex gives us a longer life span(my husband likes the sex part for sure)..LOL You will make all busy women, wives, and working mothers proud...You go girl...or shall I say, "the new women that you want to return to".
You have a healthy attitude which is great...
You need a "ME" challenge, how about a mini triathalon in late 2008, or 2009..That is my goal...I can see us doing it...LOL....
How about it.

Hello Marlee,
Thanks for the explanation as to why you wanted to lose the weight. When I first heard about this, I (and most of your fans too) couldn't understand why you would want to lose weight, because you are so beautiful and look so svelte on the screen. But I now get that this is about health, and that's something we can all get behind.
Nothing but success to you.
this is the first place I was able to find an area to post...this was actually in response to the Ricky Lake segment that aired December 2,2007.....Ricky I applaud you for reaching your goal, I have been a fan of yours for years however, I am not believing rather I am not understanding that... I am not 140lbs I am less, but I have not seen a size 2 in I dont know how long....why are so called "stars" allowed to claim that they are a 2 knowing that is a lie. At 108lbs which was not to long ago, maybe then I was a 2 I am pissed, mainly because society makes people ESPECIALLY females believe that they have to be skinny to be pretty, but a white woman can stand there and say that she is 140lbs and say she is a TWO!!!!!!!...no offense my white friends, but it sickens me, especially when I go into stores and clothes are marked size 6 or 7 and in all actuality they are a 10. I have friends that I have to convince on a regular that they are not fat because the pants say 10 and they cant fit them.....grrrrrr, I know there are more challenges that people are facing but this has really got my goat. Ricky you are not in any way a size 2 and are 140lbs. (PERIOD
