The New Show-Saving Trend?!
I hate it when shows I really like get the ax. NBC has not officially canceled "Journeyman" but they have chosen not to produce the back nine episodes of the show. The final two shows will air next week on Monday and Wednesday at 10 PM on NBC. The show's creator has said that Wednesday's episode will at least give a little bit of closure as to why Dan Vasser actually travels back in time.
So, at least if it never comes back we won't be left hanging like fans were for Fox's "Reunion." Remember that show? I still would love to know who the killer was.
Fans of "Journeyman" are not going down without a fight. They have taken a page from "Jericho's" loyal fans. "Jericho" was abruptly canceled by CBS, leaving tons of questions but no answers. A group banned together to save the show and sent 20 tons of nuts to CBS, which was inspired by a line Skeet Ulrich uttered in the finale. Long story on that, you'll have to watch. Go buy it on DVD. It's worth the money.
Needless to say, their ploy worked and CBS renewed the show… albeit for a short seven episode second season. So, now two fans sites www.savejourneyman.net and www.savejourneyman.funurl.com have embarked on a similar campaign where they are sending boxes of Rice-A-Roni to NBC. The show is set in San Francisco, hence the "San Francisco Treat" being used.
Could this be the start of a new show saving trend? I guess it depends on how much rice they send. If NBC backs down on this, could other networks be persuaded for future shows on the verge of cancellation, by tricks like this? I guess we will have to wait and see on that one.
I just beg of you to please not start a campaign that involves sending back hair to save ABC's "Cavemen"!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who wants to know who the killer was on Reunion!!
I like the show. When are networks going to learn that even if a show is not an instant hit that they have a better chance of lasting a loooonnng time. Examples, Firefly was canceled by Fox only to receive enough fan support for them to make a feature film based on the series. M*A*S*H was not a hit at first but they left it alone and it ran for eleven years and the finale was the most watch program on TV ever. And lest we forget the small Sci-Fi program from the 60's that had poor ratings during it's entire run. It spawned several movies, video games & TV Series. Star Trek is a part of the American lexicon. The first space shuttle was even named Enterprise after the starship on the Star Trek series.
Network execs should wake up to what the public actually wants and forget about "ratings". Drop several of the "reality" shows like Big Brother. Hell, if I wanted to see a bunch of people plotting against one another, lying, cheating, and backstabbing I'd just go to work. :-)
I heard NBC's decision to give "Journeyman" the ax was because the show sucked.
Journeyman was bar none my favorite this season, I was sooooo surprised to see it canceled! Not even Heroes compared! I am joining in the campaign to save it. I encourage others to do the same.
Count me in the throng of people that will shun TV altogether if Journeyman is pulled. I love this show--the writing, the acting, the plotlines--and know that, if given time to evolve a bit more and gain the patience of a greater audience, it would be a solid show for a long time, much like Quantum Leap. The romantic angles and mystery are far more interesting than QL and there's no lame acting like Dean Stockwell... And, with the last episodes, the show was just starting to gain momentum...
Anyway, not that my opinion counts much in the realm of TV ratings, but I'll not throw my dollars at a network that has no patience with a show as good as Journeyman.
Best of luck to your crappy network NBC. You deserve to be locked in the ratings basement.
Laura,
Thanks for giving Journeyman its props. It is an amazing show that I watched twice most weeks. Once when it aired, and then the next day with my parents who had taped it. A show that is a favorite for 2 generations, and for my mom that doesn't like tv? Unheard of! Every episode was brilliant, and they just kept getting better. We all need to tell our friends to watch it on NBC.com.
