A Different Kind Of Globes
Well the reviews are in for our primetime Golden Globe Winners Special last night on NBC and they are wildly positive....or positively wild.
Frankly, we all knew the raves would escape us. Who wants to see anyone reading winners' names instead of the unpredictable speeches, surprised newcomers, inebriated celebrities, great gowns, hair and jewels that come with the Globes every year? Nobody really.
We knew that. I'd much rather see the globes and then host our backstage hour with the winners...as was the original plan before the writers strike changed all of this.
In the end, people are not saying nice things about me and Nancy O'Dell today (and she's the nicest person I know), but the roots are not personal. People are frustrated with the writers strike and the first time since 1964 when they were first televised nationally, the Globes did not go on. If the parade of celebs are going to be halted, from the viewers perspective, it had better be because there is something much better.
Nope, it was Nancy and me. Before us, it was Matt Lauer and the folks at Dateline....they are not faring well with critics either.
People are venting. I get it. And I'm frustrated too. Let's hope the strike gets resolved and we all get back to the business of creativity and celebration thereof.
I'd also like to clarify a comment I made last night on the fly. I expressed surprise that Cate Blanchett won the globe for her turn as Bob Dylan in 'I'm Not There'. I said it was a 'woman imitating a man'.
Due to the lack of time for the show, our comments had to be pithy at most. With more time, my point would have been the same...that for me personally, I'm too much of a realist. I cannot get past that point. The soft, pale skin, the voice being forced into a more testosteronic pitch. But, the work was courageous, bold and frankly very cool. I can't imagine another woman pulling it off with such cool.
Frankly i love u bill but i dont wanna be watching u reading names all night ..i rather see the fashion and glamour ..Tamara
Billy,
Critics and viewers weren't venting because of the strike, they were venting because NBC pretended results were still coming in over the full hour when the press conference was over in 35 minutes!
Even though Sunday night's show was dull we still find out who won on TV. I love your show but stick to the fashion, gossip, and red carpet.
The comment you made about Cate Blanchett after you announced her as the winner for the supporting actress category was so unnecessary, unprofessional and ignorant. Did you actually watch her performance in "I'm Not There"!? Even if you don't like her performance, as an announcer you should not be adding your own idiotic comment. Cate is a very talented actress, and you are one unprofessional and ignorant entertainment broadcaster! Guess you really do live up to the Bush name...

Yes, perhaps your favorite Amy Ryan can pull it off with more cool than Cate. After all, doesn't she have 20 years of acting experience and 2 Tony nominations under her belt? And her role of a drugged out white thrash mom is indeed very difficult for other female actresses to pull off, even for someone like Cate. I am sure her 3 oscar noms and 1 win, as well as other Golden Globe, SAG and other acting awards are not nothing compared to Amy's 2 Tony's NOMINATIONS.
Maybe you should watch Bob Dylan in his androgynous stage from the "Blonde on Blonde" documentary before you express your dumb opinion on live TV!
I will not listen to a single word you utter again on TV.
Billy,
It's Nevada, not Nevaada. You owe the locals an apology. Learn from Barack's wife...
Thanks

It's ironic that you are criticizing Cate Blanchett as nothing more than a woman imitating a man, when it seems that's exactly how YOU made it onto television. Also, way to try and play it off that people are only venting about the writer's strike, when the fact is that they just don't like you.
Billy, your comments on Cate were indeed unecessary and ignorant. AH is supposed to be a "news program" for the entertainment world - this makes you a "newscaster" for entertainment news. A little objectiveness would have been good.
At the end of the day, Cate Blanchett played an androgynous enigma that defied labeling. Any self-respecting film watcher can certainly respect the opinions of those that actually preferred Amy Ryan's performance. I suspect if Ryan had won and a person were to say "At the end of the day, she is just a woman playing an neglectful mother", they would be met with similiar criticism and rightfully so. I covered my eyes during the Keisha Castle Hughes/Johnny Depp incident; I cringed during the Jeremy Piven red carpet interview, but this comment can only make me hope we never see or hear the likes of you during any award ceremony.
