'Idol's' Internet Hoaxer Speaks Out
Last, week, a 29-year-old woman from Orlando, Florida was successfully able to trick the media into believing that she had a video of "American Idol" contestant (and rumored Top 12 female) Kristy Lee Cook naked in a video available for sale on www.undercoveredonline.com.
The story was picked up all over the Internet and its legitimacy was debated on message boards. It turned out to be a hoax perpetrated by someone with a different message - Get out and vote.
I tracked the person responsible for this down and while I absolutely, unequivocally don't agree with her choice of how she got her message across (hurting an innocent victim) I do agree with the message - That we spend too much time watching, reading and discussing frivolous topics.
I posed a bunch of questions to Heather, the hoaxer, some of which she answered some of which she ignored. 'Did you think about how this might affect Kristy when you did this?' 'Do you know Kristy?' 'Do you have any idea how many people actually clicked on the Web site before you changed it?' 'Did anyone actually try to "buy" the video?' 'Who was the naked person in the video?' 'Do you have any concern that Kristy may try to sue you?' 'Do you have any regrets about doing this?'
Here is how she responded. I've promised Heather that I would use her entire mail. So here it is in it's entirety:
"I want to be clear about this Hoax. All the images used were free and available on websites similar to you tube. A minimal amount of investigation would have uncovered this immediately. The original version of the website was set up so that if you clicked on the button to access the video you would reach my letter. But after a few hours, some websites looking for scandalous news started to talk about the fake strip tease video, ignoring completely the fact that the hoax had already been discovered on websites like slimtertainment.com and glitteratigossip.com. That's why I decided immediately to remove the front page and to replace it by the political statement. I really feel that our society has become to sensationalized and schizophrenic. We have problems in the USA that other developed countries do not have. In other democracies it is not a minority of people who closely follow a presidential election but the majority. They have enough pride in their system to read more than one news source before making a decision, unlike most Americans. Unfortunately, we are at a point of complete apathy from the voters, there is a sense that nothing in politics is going to change, that all of the candidates are the same and end up in the pockets of the lobbyist. When people start to feel that they can't do anything to control the situation they slowly turn their attention from it and to more entertaining endeavors like voting for the next American idol. We are overly entertained in the USA and literally "amusing ourselves to death". In order for changes to happen here, every individual has a responsibility to stay informed, not only entertained. Kristy Lee Cook was already the most searched AI contestant, she is certainly even more popular now than before. The original idea was to only touch people who spend their time looking for this kind of scandal about celebrities and to tell them that there are more important things going on in our country. Again, the hoax was discovered after a few hours. The websites that decided to ignore it have their own responsibility. They obviously need to be a more careful if they really want to consider themselves journalists. They have to verify what they are reporting. Copy/pasting is not journalism."
For the record, I did not report on this story until I after the hoax was revealed. Do you agree with what she did or her message? Let me know your thoughts.
Deliberately damaging another person's reputation by publishing information you know to be false in order to gain attention for your own agenda is despicable, regardless of the merit of the message. Not only that, it is probably grounds for a libel and defamation suit. I hope Heather gets sued for so much money that her grandchildren will be paying it off.
If Kristy needs a good lawyer, I'm available... we'll sue the pants off of Heather.
