My Interview with Presidential Hopeful: Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
What a get! My producer, Jen Zweben, had been working the Hillary people forever for this interview and it paid off. Tim Russert even made mention of the fact that she was denying him an interview-but granted one to Access Hollywood!
I never really paid much attention to gender issues. In my own life, I’ve never allowed thoughts of gender discrimination to convolute my thinking. Even though I’m sure there are occasions that I am treated differently due to the fact that I'm a female, I try never to consider the possibility and opt to always remain positive. But reflecting upon Hillary and her journey, I have discovered that the issue cannot be ignored. Of all the candidates in this presidential election, Hillary may have the toughest road simply because it's a new road that she, and she alone, has to pave her herself.
Being the first, legitimate (and by legitimate I mean one of the favorites to win), female presidential candidate, she has no examples or role models to follow. No path/road has been paved. She doesn’t have the luxury of making choices based on the success, or even failures, of candidates before her. The male candidates have seen what works: the crisp suit…the witty charm…the hidden talents. I wonder how many candidates have referenced the indelible image of Former President Clinton, in sunglasses, playing his saxophone. Countless, I am sure. But for Hillary, that luxury doesn't exist. She is a pioneer and she is building this road for all of us.
She has to, ever so carefully, decide how much vulnerability to show or how much strength. By the way, how is an American female candidate supposed to dress, anyhow? She has to make all of these decisions in a super digital world where everything is critiqued and scrutinized more than any previous election.
What makes her road even more awesome is the manner in which women are judged. For example, in Saturday's debate she was criticized for getting angry and defensive-but it seems as though when the men get upset it’s different. Hillary gets upset in a debate and all of a sudden she's "melting down." When instead, she told me today-she is merely passionate about the changes she’s made. I promise you, I'm not that girl. You know, the feminist with a chip on her shoulder who believes every shortcoming in a female's life is based on gender discrimination. But, in Hillary’s case it is true - at the very least to some degree.
Moreover, as I said earlier, when she IS tripped or misjudged in a debate or in an interview (or even stumbles as she is entitled), what example does she have to refer to in attempting to recover? She has but only herself.
As far as my actual interview went, I sat down with her to see "the other side of Hillary." Though I may not have attained too much in that vein, I fully understand how hard it is for someone in her position to be totally forthcoming. Could she, for instance, admit that her guilty pleasure is the show "I Love
I am, by no means, endorsing Hillary or any other candidate. I am simply acknowledging the reality of the situation as well as, my observations. Years from now, when a female candidate makes a serious run for the office of United States President, they will have the luxury of studying and referring to the road that Hillary is paving right now. I must also acknowledge that Barrack Obama, himself, is in a similar predicament. As an African American on the threshold of being elected, he too is a lone, pioneer and one whom I would love to converse with.
For now - hope you're able to catch the interview with Hillary. I would love to interview
Some fun notes: I did see
As we waited for Hillary to arrive I played hockey in the hallway with some of her staffers. I beat them – and I did it in high heels! (It just so happened that there were sticks and balls and being a lifelong hockey fan I couldn’t resist!)
Incidentally, Hillary asked me before the interview if I liked my job and I told her, “yesterday I was filming lions and tigers at Tippi Hedren’s Shambala Preserve and when I finished that interview I was on my way to the airport to interview you. Of course, I loooove my job!"
Maria was a puppet to the Hillary campaign. The intense effort to make her look "normal", kind, and friendly was laughable. Perhaps the next step is Maria interviewing her after winning the oscar for her performance in the diner yesterday showing emotion. Seriously, this is access hollywood?
Ms. Menounous,
It was highly inapproriate to refer to the former president as "Bill" in your interview with Hillary Rodham Clinton. For the future, the correct reference would have been Mr. Clinton or the former president.

When do the rest of our presidental hopefuls get FREE PRESS? I was appalled at you bringing her on. You are in the press REMAIN NEUTRAL!!! She also needs to read Teddy Roosevelt's speech on immigration from 1907. He had the right idea. Worry more about things in this country than to critize Pres. Bush. Lord knows she didn't like it when she was on the receiving end. Judge not lest ye be judged--read your BIBLE. She also has NO experience much less 30 years. Where did she come out with that. A good example is a quarterbacks wife. If she watches for years is she as good as her husband on th play field. Think about it. I believe you have been unfair to the other candidates running. Woman or not. Thank you
I do not receive your daily gossip and breaking news since your new website has been launched. I was getting your daily newsletter and breaking news everyday from your previous website.I do not find anywhere on your new website to re-subscribe.Have you discontinued that.A disappointed fan.Maria,I loved your interview with Hillary Clinton.I have watched the show for years and LOVE Access Hollywood.
Maria this was definitely a good get! I thought it was tastefully done. You touched upon important topics, but still kept it light.
In response to others:
What preferential treatment? Every candidate go on different talk shows and news programs to prove that they are worthy of our votes. It just so happens that Clinton went on AH. I'm sure AH would also love to interview the other candidates especially Obama since he is considered to be the hippest of all candidates.
Judi: Except for public broadcasting, very few news outlets are 'neutral'. Have you seen CNN/ABC/CBS/NBC news lately? Some newsmen declared that the race for a democratic nominee was over after Iowa for crying out loud.
AH did an interview with Clinton - they didn't declare her to be their favorite or to be the shoe-in. They asked questions, she answered.
Is gossip television subject to equal time requirements? Can NBC/Universal at least PRETEND to be fair-minded about this election. Every time I turn on the TV, it's a Hillary love fest. I don't mind Hillary, but can you at least pretend to be objective?
Great blog subject! I am so glad that an entertainment journalist did a peice on Senator Hillary Clinton. Thank you for your mention of the obstacles that Senator Clinton has been faced with that other (male) presidental candidates do not have to deal with. Great article!!!!
Ms. Menounous,
