Spanning The Globes

Javier Bardem

My Sunday started at 3:00 in the morning when the alarm went off while I was dreaming about Javier Bardem.

Not in an “oh-he’s-hot” way but, in a “please-don’t-kill-me-like-you-did-everybody-in-No Country For Old Men” way. I pushed the snooze button a couple of times before I dragged myself out of bed to get ready before the car came to pick me up at 4:45 to take me to the studio to get hair and makeup done.

My first “hit” time was 6:10am. I was doing affiliate hits – interviews with a series of television stations around the country promoting NBC's Golden Globe Winners Special announcing the winners of the awards. With the writer’s strike, the Globes were reduced to a press conference – no red carpet, no fancy gowns.

So, NBC decided to make things a little more fun for the audience by presenting the announcements in a one-hour show full of clips from the film and television shows nominated along with other interviews of the stars that we have done over the years.

Putting on a show was a monumental task with details changing by the minute.

Nancy O’Dell and Billy Bush read the winners as they were being announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at the news conference.  My job during the show was to give an analysis of the winners with Dave Karger of Entertainment Weekly magazine.

It was a night of sure winners and some surprising upsets and with the Golden Globes being a good predictor of the Academy Awards, it was very exciting!

Here are some of the highlights of the night from television and film and some tips on what to look out for when Oscar comes calling:

Even though Cate Blanchett is a Golden Globe darling with 7 nominations under her belt, her win in the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture category for “I’m Not There”  playing Bob Dylan was a surprise.

Jeremy Piven is a buddy of mine and I was glad that he won his first Golden Globe for his role as Ari Gold in “Entourage”. He told me today that it was just his luck that, after three losses, he would win and could not give an acceptance speech.

Look out for Jon Hamm. He plays on AMC’s “Mad Men” and won the Globe over front-runner and two-time reigning champ Hugh Laurie in “House” for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama. This was Hamm’s first nomination and this win makes him a breakout star. “Mad Men” also walked away with Best Television Series – Drama beating out “Grey’s Anatomy” and “House”.

In Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, everyone had been talking about Nikki Blonsky of “Hairspray” and Ellen Page of “Juno”. Both of them were shut out by the win of French actress Marion Cotillard of “La Vie en Rose” for her remarkable transformation into singer Edith Piaf.

No brainer. Javier Bardem in as a menacing serial killer in “No Country For Old Men” for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.

And kudos to Queen Latifah who won for her role as Ana in “Life Support” – an HIV-positive woman who channels her energies to help her community by working with an AIDS outreach group.

A huge upset in the Best Director – Motion Picture category. Julian Schnabel won for “The Diving Bell and The Butterfly” over Joel and Ethan Coen of “No Country for Old Men”. The Coen brothers were definitely the front-runners in this race so, watch what happens with Oscar!

Johnny Depp has been the Susan Lucci of the Golden Globes – nominated 7 times without winning. Well, the losing streak has come to an end. He won for the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for his role in “Sweeny Todd”. Who knew Johnny could sing? The movie also had a huge night, winning in the Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical category.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama went the beautiful 66-year-old Julie Christie for her role as an Alzheimer’s patient in “Away From Her”.  Julie’s last Golden Globe nomination was for “Shampoo”…33 years ago!

And in the Actor category – Daniel Day-Lewis for his villainous performance as a ruthless oil driller in “There Will Be Blood.” He will easily land a Best Actor Oscar nomination for the 4th time.

And the biggie of the night - in a very close race – “Atonement” beat out “No Country” for Best Motion Picture Drama.

Even though there was no red carpet, our team at Access Hollywood and NBC News did a great job putting on a show that was fun and entertaining!

Kudos to all and….

Let the Oscar race begin!

Hi Shaun this is a random question but I wanted to know before the launch of the new website there was a style section where it featured what Nancy, Maria, and you wore. Where can I find that on this website? Thanks!
