A New Kids Fan's Dream Comes True!

The New Kids on the Block with Kathy and Nomiby Kathy Suarez, Access producer

Breathe. One...two...three...breathe.

Okay.

Today, April 4, 2008 is a new milestone in my life. This was bigger than my wedding day (I still love you Coco). Yes, that’s a bold statement, but it’s true!

My stomach fluttered, my heart raced and I could barely breathe. My hair was perfectly blow dried for the BIG occasion. My New Kids on the Block shirt was so fresh and so clean. Someone, who just a day before the big interview, bragged about how composed she would be. So as Nomi (my friend and colleague at Access Hollywood) and I wait to meet the guys, I remember my 9-year-old self -- I am wearing my New Kids on the Block pajamas with all their faces on me, looking into Joey McIntyre’s eyes as he looks at me from the poster hanging behind my wall and me kissing him before going to bed, going to the record store and buying my NKOTB pins, and then there was that horrible memory of me crying hysterically when my mom told me that I could not go to their Miami concert because I was too young. A memory I prefer to block out because it hurts just thinking about. I was devastated. My world would never be the same. Life was not worth living if I could not see NKOTB up close and personal from the nosebleed section singing “Step by Step” and “The Right Stuff!” What parent would do that to a child?

But little did I know that life had a surprise waiting for me...

Fast Forward 15 years later and I am standing in the “Today” show green room waiting for them to walk in. There are platters of food everywhere -- food that they have touched! I wonder, "What if I took some and sold it on EBay?" "Which carrot or Polio-O cheese did Joey bite into?"

Then the door opens and in comes Joey first (my fave!) and he tells me "I love your shirt!" and I say "And I love you."

Did I just tell him that I loved him?! I did! And it felt good!

The little girl in me took over. It was love again at second sight. The boys are back on the block and I could not be happier. Let me just say that they are even HOTTER now. Maybe because at 9, I was in lust, but now at 27, its true love!

Shy Jonathan is handsome and sweet, Joey is goofy and his eyes are even bluer than the poster, Donny is still the bad boy and quite the ladies man, Danny is looking yummy and buff, and Jordan is still his flirty heartbreaker self!

After collecting my crazy self together and putting my producer face on, the boys dished on their reunion, upcoming record, and THE FANS. Rain or shine, the fans came out from under their NKOTB bed sheets! Jean jackets, big pins and posters with old photographs were floating in the audience. The fans never left. Yes, most of them are married and have kids. Some lucky ones are single and may have a shot, but the bottom line is that all these women came together to show their undying devotion to the five men who captured their heart with their dance moves and blue jean overalls.

Now back to me. So after 15 years, the band is back together with a new sound and a new album. They said it feels organic to bring the group back and give back to their fans. There is genuine love here. The guys got along magnificently, and even kidded around as to who was the better dancer -- Jordan or Danny?

Even more great news, they have a new album coming out and will be performing on the “Today” show May 16. I will definitely be in that audience.

As our interview wrapped and it was time to say goodbye, I did not want to let go. I wasn’t ready to put that little girl inside me back to bed. So many wonderful memories of growing up, of first crushes, of fighting over who was hotter -- Joey or Jordan, of collecting pins. It completely overtook me. I didn’t have to cry anymore about missing their concert because I was actually going to get to go.

Working at Access Hollywood has its perks. It has given me so many opportunities to meet idols and other great artists. And it’s times like these, when I am sitting around with the New Kids on the Block, that I love Access Hollywood even more.

And to any New Kids on the Block haters out there: Are you ready?! Because the boys are HANGIN TOUGH!
