Please Celebrities I Beg You, Stop Doing Reality Shows!
In the interest of resurrecting or igniting a lagging career, more and more C and D list celebrities are signing up for reality shows.
First there was MTV's "The Osbournes" which followed the lives of rocker Ozzy Osbourne and his dysfunctional family. Many people wondered why anyone would care about the Osbournes. You can barely understand Ozzy through the muffled talking and bizarre behavior - but the show was an instant success and all of a sudden Sharon, Kelly and Jack became overnight stars and the celebreality show craze was born.
Next, there was the "The Anna Nicole Smith Show" followed by "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica" and later "Tommy Lee Goes To College" among others. This trend died down for awhile thank goodness. However, all of a sudden it's back in a big way. Right now on the airwaves we are "Keeping Up With the Kardashians", finding "A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila", learning that “Hogan Knows Best" or catching a glimpse of "Gene Simmon's Family Jewels."
Enough is enough!
I know we all like to know every last detail of a celebrities personal lives but fading starlets and celebrity siblings are not who I want to see. Tom Cruise making breakfast with Katie and Suri that I would watch. Brad and Angelina playing hide and go seek with Pax, Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh - that's entertainment. Of course, these are the type of stars that would never ever do a reality show and that's why they are the stars they are.
Then there are the "group" reality shows where a whole slew of not seen in awhile celebrities are thrown together on a show - has beens live together ("The Surreal Life"), stars tackle their alcohol and drug demons, ("Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew"), they bust out their singing pipes ("Celebrity Duets"), they don ice skates (Skating with Celebrities), lose weight (Celebrity Fit Club) or the mother of them all, strap on the ballroom shoes.
Don't get me wrong I do enjoy watching "Dancing with the Stars" but every season I chuckle at the people willing to lower themselves to this brand of television for a chance at well, a second chance.
DWTS is a standout above the rest and I can't exactly pinpoint why but I guess it just has to do with the classy aspect of ballroom dancing. Plus, the professional dancers are so incredible to watch and the costumes are so over the top fun and skimpy. When they first announced the show everyone around here thought "CHEESE!" but somehow John O'Hurley, Joey McIntyre, Kelly Monaco and the others won us over during season one and years later this show is the one everyone tries to copy.
This is also the one show I think any D lister aspires to get on. I hear the waiting list is long and many have approached ABC but been turned away because they already appeared on a reality show.
The latest DWTS copycat is "Secret Talents of the Stars" which premiered on CBS last night. It also got dumped by the network after one embarrassing airing. This is train wreck TV at its best. "Star Trek's" George Takei wants to be a country singer, crooner Clint Black wants to do stand-up comedy, skater Sasha Cohen became an acrobat and R & B singer Mya learned to tap dance. My guess is they all wanted to do DWTS and somehow an executive at CBS convinced them that "Secret Talents of the Stars is going to be the next Dancing with the Stars." Not!
Next up its "Celebracadbra" where celebrities try to become magicians. No, I'm not kidding that really is a show coming out.
Seriously, please can we stop all this reality insanity! Why can't celebrities just fade into obscurity with dignity instead of chasing fame? Is it really all that important that they are willing to embarrass themselves on national television? There has to be a better way than doing anything with the label "with the stars."
"Celebracadbra"?? HAHA!! The network that is putting this on the air clearly has a sense of humor... a sense of taste, not so much.
I really miss the good ol' days when well-scripted sitcoms ruled the airwaves.
I enjoy DWTS as well. Celebs that go there don't seem desperate. They look like they're having fun. But I agree with you on the rest. It's getting ridiculous. There was a time when being called a "celebrity" meant something. At least DWTS gets 'real' has-beens - people who have actually done something interesting in the past.
"Secret Talent of the Stars" is just plain stupid. Someone as talented as Sasha Cohen should not have submitted herself to that crap. Nancy Kerrigan was on the same boat with Skating with Celebrities.
They both got screwed - they need to call Kristi Yamaguchi's agent. Kristi's looking good right now on the dance floor
NO
