'Lost' Season Five Secrets Revealed?

lostpanel.jpgOn my final day at Comic-Con I hit up the "Lost" panel where I may or not have been privy to information about the new fifth season. You'll see why in a minute. "Lost" is my favorite TV show of them all right now. Devotees waited in line up to six hours for the chance to sit in on this panel. Don't get me wrong; I love the show -- but certainly not enough to wait around that long. Fortunately, I breezed past the line of sweaty, tired people and went in through the VIP entrance twenty minutes before it started. I'm an entertainment industry snob, what can I say.

(BTW - if you don't watch "Lost" you should probably stop reading this right now and I won't be offended. You won't get any of this.)

Of course, the cast and crew won't start filming again for another three weeks. So, really how much can you learn before cameras roll? Well, at Comic-Con you at least have the opportunity to learn a little information because fans get access to the Executive Producers, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. These are the only two guys who have this all mapped out and figured out in their heads. They have picked an end date for the show and know that only 34 hours remain for it.

So, you would think the "Lost-ees" would come armed with all sorts of questions like "Where did the island go?" "Is John Locke really dead?" Or most importantly, "Why does Jack want to go back to the Island so badly?" Instead, I was severely disappointed in the Q&A that went on during this panel. No one really asked the tough questions. Instead they threw out fairly softball questions. It was almost to the point where I thought maybe the people who were given the opportunity to ask questions were plants by ABC.

Carlton and Damon were obviously prepared for any and all questions to be thrown at them. They pulled off a great gimmick by bringing along appropriate gifts for those who did ask a question. To the person who asked, "How old is Richard Alpert?" they received a t-shirt that said, "I asked a Richard Alpert question and all I got was this lousy t-shirt." The person who inquired about how an actor's strike might affect the show they received a photo of Nikki and Paolo (to a huge round of applause and chuckle from the crowd). Someone inquired about whether or not Rousseau would ever have her back-story told and was gifted with "I'm Lost" luggage tags. Do you see what I mean though about these lame questions?

This is not to say that a few things did not spill out. We did learn that we have not seen the last of Jin, who seemingly died in the tanker explosion. Carlton and Damon revealed that he would be back in some form whether it be in a flash forward, a flash back or the new form of storytelling they keep promising for next season. We have also not seen the last of Locke, despite the final scene of him dead in the coffin during a flash-forward. As the EP's told the crowd of 6,500 (yes!!), "death is a relative term on 'Lost.'"

It was also revealed, as in past seasons, when the first episode premieres we won't know in the opening scene whether its a flash forward, a flash back or something else.

The most telling bit of information came in the form of a video shown, which was "stolen" by a "Dharma Initiative recruit." The video showed Dr. Marvin Candle in one of those jump cutty videos where certain tidbits of information are left out. In this video he was not in a Dharma Initiative lab coat, but rather, he was sitting in plain street clothes on a couch in what looked like a living room (possibly in The Others camp?). What I picked up from this video was that his real name was Pierre Chang. He and his colleagues had been conducting researching on the Island, which has "extraordinary properties," for thirty years. A "violent purge" of the Island left them all dead. The video was being filmed in the event someone saw it. A plea was made to whoever saw the video, "You have to continue the research. You have to find a way to save us, to save the past."

So, after seeing that I'm thinking this must be why Jack wants to go back to the Island. He must have seen this video, right?

Wrong! Maybe. I'm so confused! You see, I talked to Matthew Fox a few minutes after the panel and he said he believes Jack wants to go back to the Island because his life has spiraled so far out of control and the Island is the only place he can get back in balance - not because he found that video. Huh? So, why the heck did they show that video?! And why do I have to wait till January to find all of this out.

Aaahhhhh!
