Meeting James Blade... I Mean... Blake
All the athletes felt like stars as passengers whispered, “Who is that?” and stared every time they saw someone on Team USA.
It was until several hours on the plane that I noticed a really cute guy sitting behind me who was also wearing a USA jersey. Our conversation went something like this:
“What team are you on?” I asked very innocently. “Tennis,” he smiled.
“Oh really? There are lots of tennis players on this flight. Do you know Serena and Venus?”
“Oh, yes, I know them very well.”
“Where do you rank among players?”
“In the world, I think I’m 8th.”
“Wow! You’re pretty good. What about in the States?”
“Uh, well. I think I’m pretty much near the top.”
“Oh really? Impressive. What’s your name?”
“James Blake. And yours?”
“Shaun Robinson.”
“Are you participating in the games, Shaun?”
Then I explained that I worked for Access Hollywood, yada, yada, yada and we had a really nice conversation.
A few hours later, before we were going to land, he and I started talking again about the games and I kind of joked that maybe I will be interviewing him in Beijing.
“Very nice meeting you and I won’t forget… James BLADE.”
“BLAKE,” he said sweetly.
“BLAKE,” I blushed.
Didn’t he use to have dreadlocks? Oh, back in 2002? Oh, OK.
OK, so I know that gals very well - the Williams sisters have me hooked - but I haven’t been following the men as much. But, the tennis studs just got a liiiiittle more interesting for me. Especially after I interviewed Mr. JB after he won his first match. Probably one of the nicest, sweetest guys you’d ever want to meet. And one with an incredible story of triumph to tell which he talks about in his book, “Breaking Back: How I Lost Everything and Won Back My Life.” Well, you have certainly won a fan in me.
Good luck, James!
Peace,
Shaun

OMG!!!
Should't you have done your homework b/4 representing Access Hollywood at Beijing???? Shame on you as an African American journalist next time MAKE SURE who all the athletics are and specially someone like BLAKE!!!!!!!
Good luck to you dummie....
Carolina, your comments were totally inappropriate. James' change of hairstyle HAS made him look somewhat different and more difficult to identify, especially when sitting near big stars like the Williams sisters. Moreover, if James didn't mind being misidentified by Shaun, then you have no reason to be upset. Both Shaun and James appeared to enjoy flirting with one another.
