November 2008 Archives

Thumbnail image for dollhouse 211.jpgFour of "American Idol's" favorite finalists have teamed up and are coming to a city near you. Season 3 runner-up Diana DeGarmo, Season 2 third place finisher Kimberley Locke and last season's David Hernandez (Top 12) and Chikezie Eze (Top 10) are embarking on a 15 city tour under the title "American Stars In Concert For The Holidays."

Audiences will get a chance to get up close and personal as these former Idols perform an array of holiday songs and a few original tunes. Unlike Season 7's mostly solo-heavy "American Idol" tour, this show will be a mix of solos, group numbers and duets. Joining in on the fun as the tour,s musical director is one of my favorite Idol guys, Michael Orland, who serves as the "American Idol" pianist, arranger and Associate Music Director each season.

I had a chance to visit with the fabulous foursome as they rehearsed for the tour, which kicks off Saturday, November 29th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (my hometown!).

Rotation of luke grimes 003.jpgAny fans of "Brothers and Sisters" know that the show's core mystery this season is where and who is Ryan Lafferty, the illegitimate son of deceased patriarch William Walker. Last year, the family was led to believe that Rebecca (Emily VanCamp), the daughter of William's mistress Holly (Patricia Wettig) was his offspring but a paternity test proved otherwise. It turns out the real child may be from yet another uncovered mistress, who has recently passed away. Up until this point in the show, William's widow Nora (Sally Field) has tracked down the father of Ryan Lafferty, George, but we have yet to meet Ryan. That is all about to change very soon.

Last week I visited the set to meet Luke Grimes, the newcomer who has been plucked for this prime role. As of right now he has only been signed to four episodes, but my spies tell me they are eyeing him as a series regular.

Up until this gig, Luke had only had small roles in some small films. Although if he had his way he could have been standing in the shoes of "Twilight" mega star Robert Pattinson. The two have similar coloring and a similar look, which was obviously the look "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke was going for in the film. Luke auditioned for the role of Edward Cullen as well as several other characters.

"They brought me back," Grimes told me. "I met with the director a few times for Robert Pattinson's role and then for one of the brothers. But again, not the right fit."

Shaun Robinson in DubaiIt has actually taken me a week to recover from being awestruck at all of the incredible sights I witnessed in Dubai.

It is a place obsessed with "est's."

The biggest, the fastest, the tallest, the most expensive-est. (Okay, I took liberties with that last one but, you get my point.) There is no dream too big, too outrageous or too expensive in the quest to be the best.

It is hot. It's winter in Dubai but, it's still 80 degrees and many of the guests here at Atlantis the Palm hotel where I stayed were out sunbathing by the pool sipping on fruity drinks and slathering on suntan lotion, just baking.

And then, others are skiing. Yes, you read that correctly. Skiing. In the snow.

Tell us what you think .... below!
Do you agree... or disagree, with the critics?!

trueblood1.jpgSo, right now I am clearly vampire obsessed --  between my new "Twilight" "fiancé" Robert Pattinson and my thirst for all things "True Blood" on HBO, I am knee deep in blood suckers. Not that this is a bad thing. Well, except now that I have seen "Twilight" already and "True Blood" is heading towards its finale this weekend where will I get my vamp fix?!

I'll be going through withdrawal at least until summer when "True Blood' returns for Season 2. For now, I will have to make do with the fact that I got to pick the brain of the "True Blood" trio of Rutina Wesley, Sam Trammell and Ryan Kwanten today for a little sneak peek into the season finale airing Sunday night on HBO -- that's Tara Thornton, Sam Merlotte and Jason Stackhouse for all you vampire haters who have yet to find this little gem of a show (or are too cheap to pay for HBO!).

So lets get down to the bloody business of breaking down the finale. When we last we saw Tara she was bailed out of jail by a mysterious woman by the name of Maryann Forrester who claimed to be a social worker. Yes "True" fans, she was the same woman who was naked in the road with a pig that caused a drunken Tara to run off the road. So, why didn't Tara realize this was the same creepster woman who came to rescue her from the clink?

Green Week: Composting Is Fun!

Comments (1)

Sharon Smith, her dog Fancy and their compost binsBy Sharon Smith, Access Research Director

Composting is fun!  Really! It's simple, efficient and seems almost magical as it turns garbage into nutrient rich soil!

I got hooked about 20 years ago when the city in which I live offered a free Composter to all residents who were willing to take a short composting class.

In honor of NBC Universal's "Green Is Universal" week, I'm sharing some of my tips with you.

Getting Started !

Sharon and her kitchen compost pail

Get a pail with tight lid for your kitchen sink - I like a ceramic pail - it's attractive and won't rust.  I like to line my pail with a biodegradable cornstarch bag for ease of transferring the material to the Composter.  Put your used coffee grounds, tea bags, egg shells, potato peelings, veggie scraps, etc. in the pail.  Once it's full, transfer the contents to your outdoor compost bin (or compost pile).

ally mcbeal.jpgEver find yourself missing that quirky little show "Ally McBeal" and wondering what happened to all those super short mini skirts Calista Flockhart used to wear? Would you love to suit up in a power suit like Dylan McDermott showed off in court every week on "The Practice"? Well, if you have always wanted to own a piece of TV history then now is your chance to get in on the action.

Premiere Props on behalf of David E. Kelley Productions is holding a two-day public lot sale of thousands of high-end wardrobe and costumes from "Ally McBeal," "The Practice" and "Boston Legal."

The sale is taking place at Manhattan Beach Studios (1600 Rosecrans Avenue, Manhattan Beach, CA) on Saturday, November 22 and Sunday, November 23 from 8AM to 4PM.

A wide variety of one-of-a-kind formal, casual and children's clothing, shoes, accessories and wedding gowns will be made available from designers like Ralph Lauren, Frye, Armani, Dolce and Gabbana, BCBG, Charles David, UGG, Manolo Blahniks and many more. Manolos at discounted prices!!! I am so there!

Dan Levin, Vice President of Marking for Premiere Props, tells me that the wardrobe departments for each show chose pieces that were meant to be timeless. So, you won't have to worry about people wondering why you are rocking some classic 90's clothes. Last year, thousands of people showed up so expect crowds. The great news is that a portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Entertainment Industry Foundation.

So, not only do you have access to some cool stuff just before the holidays but you are being charitable too!

Heading to Dubai

Comments (6)
Shaun's Seat.jpgI arrived at JFK airport around 8:00 in the morning after taking the red-eye from LA. I was tired, needless to say, because, no matter how much you THINK you are going to "sleep on the plane," they don't call it the "red-eye" for nothing.

After taking the tram to a different terminal, I headed to the ticket counter of Emirates Airlines where the young ticket agent, chatting away on her cell phone, waved for "the next customer," took my passport, started typing up my boarding pass, never missing a beat in the conversation with her girlfriend. (We all know when it's "bizness" and when it's "girl, I'm getting off at six.") After about 3 minutes, she hung up, still typing away, and having yet to look up, she says, "What's going on over there? We've checked in a lot of celebrities. Yesterday, it was Michael Jordan."

"Over there" is Dubai. And we'll get into why it's the NEW spot for the rich and famous a little later.

I told chatty Cathy that I was going for the opening of the Atlantis Hotel, which is anticipated to be one of the most spectacular events of the year.  The agent smiled and told me, "Oh, you are going to have a good time on this flight! The plane is really nice. You should go to the second floor private First Class/Business lounge - it's beautiful."

Becoming even more excited, I thanked her, and headed upstairs.

The Lounge

"Have you ever been to our lounge before, Madame?" said the gentleman who greeted me beyond the private doors.

"No, I haven't. This is my first time."

"Well, welcome. Let me show you around."

Thumbnail image for ilovehugh.JPGPeople magazine finally gets it right with their Sexiest Man Alive issue. Now personally, I've been repeatedly disappointed with their choices over the years, which always seemed just a tad bit cliché. There is a bit of a debate around the Access Hollywood trailers this morning though. Some of the naysayers around here don't agree that Hugh Jackman really is the Sexiest Man. So, since this is a man who truly makes me giddy (sorry to my new "fiancé" Rob Pattinson) I feel I must defend his honor with my Top Ten reasons for loving him.

#10 - He man-scapes

There is nothing wrong with a guy who likes to groom and Hugh admits his love for Lancer Rx Repair moisturizer and a hair product called Easy Rider to People magazine. You can still be a man and be metrosexual.

#9 - He sings, dances and is still secure in his manhood

He played Peter Allen on Broadway in "The Boy From Oz" which sparked rumors that he, like Allen, was gay. And he took it all in stride. His wife tells People, that during performances, she used to overhear gay men saying, "Is he or isn't he?" She was always quick to correct them.

#8 - He's a cute daddy

You can always count on the tabloid magazines to capture a photo of Hugh doing something fun with son Oscar and daughter Ava. His wife told People magazine he likes to make them pancakes in the morning for breakfast. Yummy.

#7 - He gives great interviews

Hugh knows what we want to hear and doesn't self edit.

#6 - He appreciates his fans

At this years Comic-Con convention he flew all the way from Australia to surprise 6,000 plus fans with new footage of his upcoming "X-Men" spin-off, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"

The cast of the new Star TrekBy Jim Kiernan, Access staffer

Last night in New York, Paramount screened the new trailer and four nearly completed scenes (totaling about 20 minutes of footage) from the J.J. Abrams-directed reboot of the "Star Trek" franchise.

A humble, and somewhat nervous J.J. was on hand to introduce and talk up each scene and share his thoughts. Ironically, he opened his initial speech by admitting he was never a "Star Trek" fan growing up. You'd never know it from what was to come.

I, on the other hand, am a big fan of the franchise. Even separating myself from that group, I can say that this movie is huge. And I mean HUGE.

The footage presented has all of Abrams' "MI:3" action, volume, intensity, unsteady handheld camerawork, jarring lens flare, overall grit & some welcome wit thrown in so it never takes itself too seriously.

I refrain from saying it is a true blend of "MI:3" and "Star Trek" if this at all resembled the "Star Trek" we all know and love. The names, characters, history and villains are all there, but it's incredibly fun and fresh while catering to the fanbase with clever dialogue references from all incarnations of the property. But this is the long overdue big budget balls out reboot that Trek needed to be viable again.

twilightpremiere.JPGMove over Zach Levi -- our fake TV engagement is over!

It's been a great run ever since you proposed to me last year on the set of "Chuck" with that fake 20 karat diamond ring.

We've been milking it for laughs ever since (including last week on the set where we even discussed Honeymoon spots) but now my love, I've got a new fiancé - And his name is Robert Pattinson.

If you haven't been living under a rock you might recognize him as the world's sexiest vampire right now; Edward Cullen from the "Twilight" series. You see, last weekend Shaun Robinson interviewed Robert at the press junket for "Twilight" and he talked about how he kept proposing to Kristen Stewart (that would be Bella, rock dwellers) while they were on set. She has a boyfriend though, so that didn't work out very well.

The tables got turned on him when somehow a bunch of young fans had gotten his phone number and kept texting him marriage proposals. So, I figured if Zach can't set a date after 15 months of fake TV engage-ary, why not get in on all this proposal action with Robert!

# 7 though # 1 after the jump!

gossip.jpgYesterday I headed down to the uber-hip Echo Park neighborhood here in Los Angeles to hang out on the set of a new TheWB.com series called "Rockville, CA." It's a web only series created and executive produced by Josh Schwartz, the man behind "'Gossip Girl," "Chuck," and the late "OC" The show is a drama that centers on a group of LA hipsters who work at the fictional Rockville club and will feature performances from some very cool indie bands. It's not set to air until March though, so I'll tell you more about that project in a few months.

In the mean time, I grilled Josh for some scoop on our favorite guilty "Gossip" pleasure. Let's just say this is a man who is a good at keeping secrets, but I was able to squeak a few things out of him.

Even now they are still talking about "Gossip Girl" and how it's bad for teenagers to watch and how there is all this drinking and sex and drugs - things that we would hope that our teenagers in high school don't do. How do you feel about that?

I mean we got that on the "The OC" too and, you know, I'm sensitive to it. I get that there is a young audience watching and so, to that extent, I want to be responsible. At the same time I would harbor a guess that teenagers were having sex and drinking before "The OC," before television. I'm also weary of how much blame there is to weigh at the feet of these shows.

OK. Let's debunk some of our spoilers that I have read on the message boards about 'Gossip Girl.' I've read obviously that someone is going to die. So you are confirming that?

I confirm that.

The rumor that everyone has put out is that its Chuck's dad, Bart?

I have read that rumor.

Close? Not close? Possible?

I would be violating what we just spoke about -- giving people something to watch (but not too much) [from an earlier conversation]. It's not Blake Lively.

On The Lindsay Lohan Flap

Comments (11)
lohan.jpgIf you're reading this, it's probably because you've seen the headlines about my recent interview with Lindsay Lohan.

Nobody knows what word she used... what we DO know is that she is a huge Obama supporter. Her many blogs of support have been well documented.

As for me not questioning her on the use of the supposed word "colored"... if you replay the moment back in a quiet room five times and still cannot understand it, how was I supposed to hear an unintelligible word in the midst of an interview?

Howard Stern played the moment for Robin Quivers this morning three times and she still couldn't make sense of it.

When stuff like this happens I immediately ask, "What was the person's intention?" In this case, I don't feel Lindsay meant any harm, if she indeed did use the word. It was a mistake for which I'm sure she'd be sorry for.

Her intention, in my opinion was never to hurt anyone.

jasonpriestlyearl.jpg Fans of the original "Beverly Hills 90210" were hoping that when they first heard the news that Jason Priestley was returning to the zip code that made him famous it would be as his character Brandon Walsh. Unfortunately, Jason will not be reprising his role, but rather, he will direct the 18th episode of the series, which will start shooting in January.

So, why is Brandon staying out of "90210"? In a conference call with reporters this morning Jason explained it to me:

"There really wasn't anything interesting for me to do as Brandon on that show." He added, "As a director who directed the most episodes of the original show, I felt that I just had more to offer as a director over there and apparently, so did they."

Especially since producers chose to make Dylan the father of Kelly Taylor's four-year-old son Sammy in the show. Priestley says he has no hard feelings about the decision:

"I'm not the baby daddy -- how about that? I think that ultimately that made more sense. I think that Brandon was the kind of character that if that was Brandon's child, I think that Brandon probably would have stuck around. I would hope so anyway."

anthonyedwards.jpgIt's been six-and-a-half years since Anthony Edwards first scrubbed in on the show "ER" as Dr. Mark Greene. Edwards returns to the "ER" this Thursday in an emotional episode in which Angela Bassett's Dr. Cate Banfield recalls the night her 5-year-old son died in the ER at Cook County General Hospital.

Fans of the show will recall that after triumphantly battling brain cancer, Greene died on the beach in Hawaii. Needless to say, Dr. Greene will only be appearing in flashbacks during the episode. They are not resurrecting him from the dead! Edwards is not the only familiar face appearing in this week's episode. I'll leave off just who else might be popping up for you to discover yourself. It's certainly a walk down "ER" memory lane.

Now, I have to admit I haven't watched "ER" since season five. Whether you are a fan of the original team of docs, or you are still watching season 15 all these years later, I think you'll find yourself quite satisfied.

In honor of Access Hollywood's upcoming IT List show airing this weekend (check your local listings on our home page!) I have compiled for them my list of The IT Girls of Primetime Television. You can catch me talking about it on the show this weekend - and lucky you can check out the entire list right here before it airs!

tinafeyit.jpgAll Around IT Girl - Tina Fey
Her dead on Sarah Palin impression on "Saturday Night Live" has finally put her on the A-list map she has always deserved to be on. She's a brand new Emmy winner and her brilliantly funny comedy, "30 Rock," is finally getting the attention it deserves from the viewers (and not just the critics). Of her IT status Tina told Billy Bush on the set of "30 Rock," "It makes you feel strangely vulnerable. It does. It feels... it's a little weird. It makes me feel a little shy about it sometimes." Don't be shy Tina. We love you and we want you to know it!

anna-torv-fringe_l.jpgIT Newcomer - Anna Torv
The sexy Aussie import clearly impressed uber producer J.J. Abrams and now she joins the ranks of his other previously unknown finds - Evangeline Lily ("Lost"), Jennifer Garner ("Alias") and Keri Russell ("Felicity"). Thanks to her starring role on FOX's creepy new sci-fi show "Fringe," one of the only hits of the new TV season; she is now a fan boy favorite too.

angelaandy.jpgThey might be engaged and fumbling towards the altar but "The Office's" Angela Martin and Andy Bernard may have a major roadblock coming their way in the form of an unplanned pregnancy - and the daddy might just be... Dwight Shrute!

In a conference call with reporters this morning, actors Angela Kinsey and Ed Helms, who play the mismatched couple, tried to keep any plot spoilers under wraps.

This pregnancy thing is a rumor I had yet to hear! Kinsey, a new mom herself to a six-month old daughter, was thrown for a loop when someone asked about rumors that Angela, who is having a secret affair with Dwight, may actually be pregnant with his baby. She tried at first not to answer the question directly.

"Wouldn't you like to know! Wouldn't it be funny if all of a sudden I had to be pregnant since I was just pregnant for real?! Oh my god. Lady, I cannot answer your question!"

Of course, this leads me to believe this is not such a far-fetched development evidenced by Kinsey's next response.

"I can tell you this, things get really complicated pretty quickly in the next few episodes. That's all I can say."

83498003.jpgThis morning, The Los Angeles Times and People made some maybe-too-quick-calls in calling Yes On Prop 8 a victory so early (both, at around 8 AM PST).

The fight over the controversial California ballot initiative, which has had a combined over-$70 million poured into it from both sides (a national record in spending for an initiative), is not necessarily over yet, although the Proposition looks likely to pass now.

Even though attorney Gloria Allred, who represents the first gay couple legally married in California back in June of this year, has filed a legal challenge, she may have jumped the gun early on this one too.

(there are various other groups issuing challenges, as well -- they are listed here)

The truth is, at 12:30 PM PST on Wednesday, November 5, roughly 400,000 votes separate "Yes" from "No" (with 97% of precincts reporting) - and the "No" campaign expects, "that there are more than 3 million and possibly as many as 4 million absentee and provisional ballots yet to be counted." The No On 8 campaign has not yet conceded defeat.

83528383.jpg(note: at this time, the Yes on 8 campaign, has not declared victory on their Web site -- however, some supporters did declare victory at a rally just after midnight.)

These media outlets should take a cue from others (such as KABC and KCBS) and wait until the California Secretary of State speaks on Thursday to declare how many votes are yet to be counted, before calling the race.

This is irresponsible journalism, at best, and the LA Times and People might want to examine why they made the call so early on this controversial proposition.

calleerica.jpgIn honor of the news that ABC is letting go of Dr. Erica Hahn on "Grey's Anatomy," ending her budding romance with Dr. Callie Torres - I have come up with a list of the 15 most awkward couples on TV right now.

Dr. Erica Hahn and Dr. Callie Torres ("Grey's Anatomy")  - Unfortunately, Erica and Callie's friendship-turned-romance was a disaster from the start. The whole storyline just took us into TMSI (too much sexual information) territory, which turned fans off rather than on. "Grey's" should look at how the romance is playing out between Kevin Walker and his love, Scotty, on "Brothers and Sisters" for how to portray a proper gay couple.

And speaking of "Grey's Anatomy" let me also mention two other awkward couples...

George O'Malley and Lexie Grey - They have zero chemistry together! They're almost as bad as George and Izzie were last season. George needs to remain blind to her affections and console ex-wife Callie's soon to be broken heart. Lexie should have taken McSteamy up on his flirtations long ago and then become his crazy stalker.

Alex Karev and Izzie Stevens - They are rekindling their sex-capades and now testing out a committed relationship. Why would someone as kind and compassionate as Izzie go after someone as incapable of love as Alex; the player of all players?! Denny would be rolling over in his grave!

Mystery's Wannabes & ANY Girl They Encounter ("The Pick Up Artist") -- You can't talk about awkward encounters without mentioning VH1's "The Pickup Artist." Watching these hopeless machismo-seeking guys make move-after-move-after-unsuccessful-painstaking-move is just bad -- yet it's such good TV. Anytime you're taking advice from a dude named "Matador," you might as well just cut your losses and go home. Those poor guys. Those poor girls.

Find out who else made the list inside!

Maria and AH staff at Grant Park.jpgI'm standing here in Chicago's Grant Park as the first portion of election results are trickling in. It feels like the calm before the storm. The general public has just been allowed into the park and they are racing for position as if participating in a diamond giveaway. It's chaotic, for sure, but exhilarating.

Incredibly, the background is serene. The normally frigid Chicago is actually relatively warm, and the landscape couldn't be more beautiful.  Sky rises are all lit up.Most notably, there's one with lights arranged to read "USA."

The media and general public feel as though they are all ready to be part of history in electing either the first African American President or the first female Vice President. People came out in record numbers to vote, perhaps showing the world that we are, in fact, ready to reclaim our image and redeem the current woes we are experiencing in this country.

Young people showed what they were made of - "rocking the vote" as it were. Celebs are taking a back seat here as I've heard tonight it is all about Obama - no celebs are expected to be in view during his speech. That could change, but that's what we are hearing now.

blonsky.jpg"Hairspray" star Nikki Blonsky has landed her first primetime TV role.

The 19-year-old actress, who turns 20 this weekend, is set to film a guest-starring role for the eleventh episode of ABC's "Ugly Betty," sources close to the show confirm to Access Hollywood.

Blonsky will play an assistant at competitive magazine Elle, who becomes friends with Mode girl Betty -- but Blonsky's character may have her own agenda.

Sources said she is set for just one episode right now but it could become more. The episode is set to air before the end of the year.

jesse-csincsak.jpgThe news broke this morning that Deanna Pappas and Jesse Csincsak had ended their engagement via a statement from Deanna to In Touch magazine. Now, it looks like Deanna was the one who pulled the plug. In a video posted on what was the couples official Web site, www.deannaandjesse.com, Jesse sent a message to his fans.

Appearing forlorn and completely heartbroken Csincsak explained, "All of you guys have been amazing, followed us and supported us in everything we have done and uh, I kind of feel like its our responsibility to tell you that we are not together anymore. Deanna broke up with me two days ago."

Jesse says he tried to make it work with Deanna but ultimately she let him go.

"I did everything in my power to try and make this work but she is a great person but she wasn't willing to try anymore. She wanted something different I guess and the answer that I got was I love you but I'm not in love with you. That's a lot to swallow no matter who you are. When you are in love and you put yourself out there its a lot a lot to take in."

deannajesse.jpgWell, it was only a matter of time before reality set in and Deanna Pappas and Jesse Csincsak would realize they had nothing in common. It happened a little bit faster than I expected though.

I would have bet they made it a few more months but this morning Deanna told In Touch magazine that she had called off her engagement to the 26-year-old snowboarder telling the magazine, "I really felt like I was going to spend the rest of my life with him. I thought he was my fairy-tale ending. But after the show was over and we settled in to our normal lives, I slowly came to realize that we are two totally different people and it wasn't going to work out."

So, this brings the shows track record for "The Bachelorette" to 1 and 4. Still much better than "The Bachelors" record of 1 and 12, but then again, there have been a lot more of that show.
