Golden Globe Noms: I'm 'Lost' But Not 'Mad'
I love the Golden Globes. First, because its the best red carpet of the year. It's got superstar gridlock right in front of your eyes. No matter how many years I have been in this business I still get giddy when the first A-lister arrives. Since the whole shindig got sidelined last year due to the writers' strike, it's going to be a blast. Second, I love it because most of the time the nominations make little sense (and it gives me something to write about every year).
Unless, of course, you are foreign, because after all it is the Hollywood FOREIGN Press Association who does the voting. When it comes to film they love two things: Foreign actors and big marquee worldwide box office stars (Brad! Angie! Tom!) Actually make that three things. They love musicals too!
Lately, when it comes to TV they also seem to love cable while shunning the big four networks. Only one Best Television Series Drama nominee comes from NBC, ABC, FOX or CBS - "House" - headlined by... you guessed it - a foreign guy, British actor Hugh Laurie. I'm all for the new batch of cable shows which for the most part are grittier, edgier and/or funnier than broadcast television. Of course, this is because they can be. It's cable where the rules about language, violence and nudity are not as strict - especially on the pay cable networks where all bets are off.
I do feel that some of our big network shows are getting a raw deal though. Let's take "Lost" for instance. The whole Oceanic Six storyline brought this show back to life in season four. On the other hand, who really actually watched HBO's "In Treatment"?! I was happy to see "True Blood" secure a nomination for Best Drama as well as AMC's "Mad Men."
As for the comedies, I was happy to see "30 Rock" and "The Office" get their just desserts but I think the aging "Entourage" and Showtime's "Californication" were far outshined by other shows this year. This might be an unpopular take, but really why can't a traditional sitcom make this category? They may seem sophomoric when it comes to humor but CBS's "The Big Bang Theory," "How I Met Your Mother" and even "Two and Half Men" still have some of the funniest material out there. Why do you think they make my Top Ten TV Quotes every week? Maybe I just have low standards.
Where am I am going with all this? Well, I have no idea, I just feel like venting. Here are the people I think were left out of the party:
Elizabeth Moss - as copywriter Peggy Olson she is the heart and soul of "Mad Men."
Elizabeth Perkins - I don't understand how high-strung, Frappucino slurping Mary-Louise Parker can get nominated while Celia Hodes gets snubbed. Her turn in prison this season with the orange jumpsuit, the braids, the shaved eyebrows and overly lined lips was pure comedic geniu-osity (yes, I made that word up). Plus, I hate that whole supporting actress/actor in a series, mini-series or motion pictures made for television category. It leaves well deserving people off the list.
Jim Parsons - right now you are asking yourself, 'Who?' That would be Sheldon Cooper from "The Big Bang Theory" -- the nerdiest nerd on TV. How he keeps a straight face while delivering his lines with well, such a straight face is pure brilliance. No one can be that uptight and clueless in real life.
Marcia Cross - speaking of uptight - nobody does stick up the ass better than Marcia as Bree Hodge. Her work is consistently solid every year (even if the show isn't).
Yunjin Kim - If you didn't cry when Sun said goodbye at the gravesite to Jin on "Lost" you clearly have no heart.
Rainn Wilson - Poor Dwight is caught in a love triangle with Angela and Andy giving him some of the best material to date - much more deserving of a nod then Kevin Connolly for "Entourage." Am I wrong here?!
Ed Westwick - Sure "Gossip Girl" is pure teenage soapiness but Chuck Bass is the most deliciously seductive, evil, engaging character on television right now. Plus, he's a Brit. C'mon HFPA!!! -- He should have been on your radar for sure!
Cobie Smulders - I love that Neil Patrick Harris was nominated for "How I Met Your Mother", because he is seriously brilliant as Barney Stinson, but I feel like the TV snobs just don't give the deserved props to equally funny Robin Sherbatzky. She is Canadian after all! That's foreign. Sort of.
Jack McBrayer - I also love Jeremy Piven on "Entourage" but frankly I'm getting sick of Ari Gold being nominated. We get it. He is good at playing a psycho Hollywood agent. Let's hear it for "30 Rock's" Kenneth the Page!
And no this list is not a joke. I'm completely serious and clearly will never be asked to join any sort of TV nomination committee.
Actually, your list makes much more sense than most of the choices this year. Lost was THE BEST SHOW last season and they completely snubbed it. That is just blasphemy. And it doesn't speak well of these people's taste in TV. In my opinion, Lost was much better than House or In Treatment. It still baffles me (because, again, I don't think these people even watch half of these shows and just nominate what is being hyped) that Elizabeth Perkins hasn't been nominated for supporting actress and that they chose January Jones over Elizabeth Moss. No way. January Jones can't act. She always has the same reluctant facial expression. RAINN WILSON?!?! SUBBBED??!?! That is just outrageous and downright wrong. And I agree with Ed Westwick as well. His delivery and acting chops have made a secondary character into the star of the show. His delivery is impeccable and he deserves a nomination, but of course they will never because it's the CW. What a bunch of retards.
