Meeting The First Three Top 12 Idols
Usually when I'm going to do an interview, after the first live results show, it's with the first four contestants eliminated from the show. With the new top 36 format in place on "American Idol" though, this time I actually got to meet three of our Top 12 contestants - Michael Sarver, Alexis Grace and Danny Gokey. Sweet, sweet and super sweet. That was my first impression of the trio. No egos, no sense of entitlement just three genuine people ecstatic to be living out their dreams.
Normally by this time, I have researched every nook and cranny of these people's lives! Since my job has kept me super busy the last couple of months, I haven't been able to be as sleuthy as I have in the past seasons.
So, this is where I got the chance to learn a little bit about each of the contestants. This is stuff some Idol fans may already know but it's new to me:
Alexis tried out twice before for the show and never even made it past the first round. She plays in clubs and bars back home in Memphis.
Alexis' daughter has been watching her mom on TV. "Whenever I'm on screen they always say that she's yelling at the screen 'Mommy! Mommy!'" Alexis told me.
Michael has two daughters. Three-year-old McKenna and two-year old Grayson. He says McKenna basically runs the household, "We feel like we have to ask her permission to do anything in the house. She's pretty grown up. She called me and said 'Daddy I want to go to American Idol with you!' So I think she's making plans to make her own way [here]."
Both Michael and Danny are the music directors at their church.
The largest crowd Michael has ever played to up until this point is about 10,000 people. Danny and Alexis far, far less than that.
Danny owns 12 pairs of glasses and hopes to wear them all at some point. He does own contacts though and plans on using them too, "I'll wear contacts, I like to wear contacts but I love my glasses. I just got to get my glasses approved. I have more to come but I gotta be real careful what I wear on TV right now."
The other thing Danny plans to always wear on the show is his wedding ring, "Until I die she's still a piece of me. Half of me is in heaven and half of me is still down here."
