Done With Surgery!
I had the surgery done Friday arthroscopically. The surgeon and anethesiologist gave me the choice of going under or getting a block from the waist down. I chose the block, so I was actually awake for the surgery and got to watch it on the monitor. I didn't think I would like it as I can't even watch blood getting drawn. But because it was on a monitor and I never looked down at my actual knee, it was pretty cool.
When the surgeon first went in and saw the inside of my knee on the monitor, he said and I quote, "You really SHREDDED your meniscus!" Shredded wasn't the word I wanted to hear. I knew it was a large tear based on the doctor reading the MRI, but it was ripped up even more than the MRI depicted. I saw it myself... the meniscus was pretty torn up... kind of looked like a snow globe inside my knee. Can you belive it all started from a salsa move! The doctor cut the torn part away on both tears.... I had a small and large tear on different sides of the knee. And then before I knew it, the surgery was over. It only took about an hour. I spent several hours in recovery as the block wore off. And by afternoon, I was able to head home, albeit on crutches, but I was glad the procedure went so well and it was outpatient surgery. I was pretty woozy and sleepy yesterday from the anesthesia and pain medicine. I only had a little bit of pain yesterday and today, it hasn't been bad at all. I can only walk using crutches right now and have to stay in bed mostly.
But I've already started leg exercises today per doctor's orders and will see a physical therapist this week. After about 6 weeks of rehab, the doctor tells me my knee will be back to the way it was before the injury. All in all, not too bad. I had a great surgeon and everything went smoothly. I'm planning on my recovery being the same so I can dance again next season, I hope. I won't be back at work Monday, but I'm hoping I will feel up to it by Tuesday. See you soon.

I WISH YOU A VERY FAST RECOVERY,

Hi Nancy,
I'm glad to hear the surgery was a success, and that with rehab, your knee will be back to normal. You're a real trooper! I really hope to see you in next season's DWTS dancing with Tony!
Take Care,
Joanna
I'm glad your surgery went well. Get better so you can dance next season!!
Wishing you a speedy recovery, Nancy! You were the reason we were going to watch Dancing with the Stars and the reason we watch Access Hollywood. Lynn
Thanks for the update, Nancy. You're a real trooper. Scary that the meniscus was shredded. I'm glad the surgery went well. Wishing you a speedy recovery. I really hope to see you dancing with Tony in next season's DWTS.
Take Care,
Joanna
So glad everything went well, Nancy! Hope to see you back on Access Hollywood soon.
Hi Nancy,
I had knee surgery for a torn meniscus and ACL reconstruction last Tuesday so I know what you're going through. My surgery was a little more involved because of the ACL but I too am looking forward to the rehab. My knee has actually been bothering me for several years and I just now have found the time to have it fixed. I am also a Physiotherapist so my advice to you is to make sure you see the rehab through to the end with lots of balance and proprioceptive retraining so you have no problem getting back into those heels.
Good Luck!! I'll be watching your blog!!
Wishing you a speedy recovery, Nancy! Hope you will be back on Access Hollywood soon! Jenny
Nancy,
I am so glad your surgery went well, but still disappointed you had to drop out of DWTS. Our family loves that show and we were looking forward to watching you dance. Any chance they will let you come back on another season once your knee heals?! We will keep our fingers crossed!

i want you to know that i'm glad that everything went well with your knee but i also want to say that its not that big of a deal. i dont know why anyone really cares about how your knee is feeling i thinks it very self centered to devote a portion of the show to just your knee....so sick of hearing about it.
Nancy, I wish you a speedy recovery as well. However, you are not the only person who has had knee surgery. You have played this story up to the point where enough is enough. Get on with your life. I'm sick of seeing your face and knee every night.
Nancy,
We have something in common! I had the same surgery on Friday. My injury was from dancing at a wedding. I am home for a week due to the fact that I teach preschool. I can't wait to get back to school next Monday. For now, I am doing exercises at home. Hopefully, I won't need to do rehab.
Hi Nancy,
Watching the show on Thursday I saw that you had a knee injury and then I found out you had surgery, welcome to the club. I had arthroscopic surgery this past August and I am still healing. I had the unfortunate event of my knee becoming inflammed and irritated and I had to go back to therapy. I just want to get back to walking normal again and without pain.
If you can please give some tips on how and what you are doing other than therapy.
HI,NANCY;I`M GLAD YOU`RE BACK WALKING AGAIN ON ACCESS HOLLYWOOD,AND THAT YOUR SURGERY WENT WELL.HOPE TO SEE YOU DANCING AGAIN SOON.
HI NANCY
So I was watching the show and I saw your knee brace, and I got concerned. I had ACL reconstruction surgery about five months ago and i was worried that you had done the same!!
At last yours was just a meniscus tear. I ruptured my whole ACL...but thankfully I did not tear my meniscus at all.
I am on my way to finish up my recovery, but stay in there! It gets better, don't worry!!!
Thank you so much for going public about your knee surgery! All the information and visuals helps those of us who will be going through the same thing soon. Knowing what choices there are and what to expect helps a lot. Good luck with rehab & may GOD speed your recovery! Hope to see you dancing soon.
Hi Nancy,
I just want to say that I'm so glad that your knee surgery went well, I also want to say that while I was watching Access Hollywood today (3/27/09), I had no idea that your mother died from ALS, I am so sorry to hear that you lost your mother. I also want to tell you that my Dad died on May 12, 2008 of ALS, he was 56 years old. It was the most horrible thing that I have ever been through. I am a team captain for the walk to defeat ALS Michigan Chapter, and we're walking on Oct. 3rd. I will be thinking of you as well as everyone else (PALS) who has lost someone to this horrible horrible disease. Take care!
Tina :-)
How would you like people to know the details about another type of surgery, say inplant surgery? (If you had had it.) For goodness sakes, leave poor miss Calif. alone! Why are you punishing her for her comments when more than half of california feels the same way! And no comment about the filthy things Perez Hilton said about herS ? Shame on you, Nancy, and all of Access. I'm no longer a fan or a viewer.
Hi Nancy,
Are you pregnant? You have that look!
-Stephanie in NJ
Nancy looks so different! I mean other than the spray tan and botox. Did she get a nose job too?
I am so happy your knee surgery went well. I used to work in an Orthopaedic office so I've seen many surgeries done! 99.9% successful. :-)
I am happy to read your death equity is worth more alive than not! I read an interesting article on Michael Jackson....scary things that happen in hospitals!

Yeah Nancy, I must agree with Kelley and Sara..u do look much different. I think you had some face work done while under for your knee. U must have; u look too different.
Hi Nancy,
At the end of today's show, I did not like how you mentioned your own child being in the people magazine. I would have liked to hear Layla Ali's child's name at least. Please remember you are a host of the show and and the show is NOT about you and your life.
What have you done? you were always so beautiful....the surgery on your face does not agree with you. Please stop the surgeries now...one cat woman is enough!
