MantzRantz: And When The Sky Was Opened

Ewan McGregor in a scene from 'Angels & Demons'Access Hollywood movie critic Scott Mantz is in Rome, Italy, to cover the junket for "Angels & Demons." Read his first blog on his foreign adventures here.

Today was supposed to be the easy day.  Just three interviews with "Angels & Demons" director Ron Howard and supporting actors Ayelet Zurer and Pierfrancesco Favino.  Get to the Sony Hospitality Suite at 3 PM, start
interviews at 3:30 PM, be done by 4:30 PM.  Piece of cake.  Or so we thought.

The interviews were supposed to take place on the roof, which makes
sense -- if you're gonna be in Rome, make it look like Rome.  Otherwise,
what's the point of flying thousands of miles when you can just drive a
few miles to to get to the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills?
It was supposed to be a gorgeous day, and for a while, it was.  But
then, just like that, it rained.  No, poured.  With lightning, thunder,
the works.  And then it hailed.  Real wrath of God type of stuff.
Perfect for Rome, if you think about it.

So we waited for the junket production team to scramble and move
everything inside.  And we waited.  And waited.  Not a big deal really,
since it wasn't like I had anywhere else to be.  But the jetlag started
to kick into high gear, and I was in desperate need of a power nap.

Finally, at 6 PM, we started with Ron Howard -- a super-nice guy, even
after more then 50 years in the business.  Then we got the others, and
we were done.

The junket team still tried to make the background look Rome-ish by
setting things up in front of a window, but I still couldn't help but
feel like this could have been done just a few miles away at the Four
Seasons in Beverly Hills.

Tomorrow should go better.  Stand-ups and an interview with Tom Hanks --
all supposed to take place outside.  Forecast calls for sunny skies, but
then again, that's what they said about today.
