'Idol' Sneak Peek: Paula's Results Nights Performance
So I have to admit I really did not like Paula Abdul's last single, "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow." It just wasn't my "cup of tea" as Simon Cowell might say. I'm absolutely loving her brand new single though, "[I'm Just] Here For The Music." It's trapped in my head right now so I feel bad for the people in the hallways who keep having to listen to me hum.
Myself and a bunch of other reporters got the chance to watch Paula rehearse for her performance on Wednesday night's results show. While I can't give away the specifics of the fun and sassy choreography, I think the audience and even Simon will get a kick out of it. If you watch closely you may even recognize some signature Paula moves from her 20-year-old music videos. Here's a hint from Paula on what to keep an eye out for, "I did a version of a jump that won me an Emmy."
Paula was in great form when she arrived for the rehearsal, although she was running late as usual. You just come to expect that with her.
Watching her dance five feet from my face I forgot what a dynamic dancer she is. At 46, she easily kept up with doing the lifts and jumps alongside the 20-something dancers, one of whom happened to be "So You Think You Can Dance" Season 2 winner Benji Schwimmer. Part of the choreography was his I'm told.
We watched as Paula went over some of the routine with the dancers and then did a full run through with lyrics. Just before she started she admitted that she was nervous to perform in front of all of us. Later I asked how it was that she can be on a TV show seen by 25 million people but be nervous in a roomful of reporters.
"Because I know you guys. You know me one way. You have to like, rewind backwards to when I was doing what I've done," Paula explained.
She wasn't quite sure we would be as accepting of her away from "Idol." I don't think she had any worries.
Paula also spoke about her future on the show. I brought up to her that Simon has been saying he will leave after next season.
"I think he needs to worry about this season. He has at least one more season. My contract is up this season," Paula interjected.
So has she made a decision about staying or leaving?
"I don't know. Simon would put a choke hold on me," she joked.
Paula also had some kind words for David Cook and his family over the sad passing of his brother Adam.
"I'm close to his mother as well. I wanted to give her a little bit of space. She is probably overwhelmed," Paula said. "That whole family knows how much I supported them and Adam was a big part of the 'Idol' family. He was there giving his unbelievable support. It meant everything to David. It's very sad."
