Fall TV's Un-Official Kick-Off Week Begins!
Whoo hoo! That's how I feel about this week.
After a wild summer wrap up weekend in Vegas I'm ready for the start of the fall and all my favorite TV shows... plus, a few new ones! This week we get TV for the younger generation as "Glee," "Vampire Diaries" and "Melrose Place" kick-off while "So You Think You Can Dance" premieres their first ever fall run.
"Glee" is by far my favorite new show this year. We all got a chance to view the pilot back in May after the "American Idol" finale and I can promise you it only gets better from there. Episode two premieres tomorrow night and tonight is the big red carpet premiere party. I'll have video of that for you tomorrow. If you haven't see the show I like to describe it as "High School Musical" meets "Not Another Teen Movie." It doesn't take itself too seriously. It's quirky and funny and mean but with a heart (if that makes sense). Bravo to creator Ryan Murphy ("Nip/Tuck") for this refreshing show. It's also got a fantastic young cast whose lives could be changed forever if the show is a hit.
Tonight is the premiere of the brand new "Melrose Place" redux on the CW. I grew up on "Melrose" so for me this is big night. My friends and I are hosting a little shindig just like in the old days when we had Melrose Mondays. First, we are going to watch the pilot of the original series and then tune in for the premiere episode. Of course, we have all already watched it on DVD but we're going to re-watch it! To be perfectly honest I wasn't blown away by this first episode. I thought it needed to be a little campier and cheesier like the original. However, I watched episode two last week on DVD and trust me, the show gets much juicier next week. So keep watching next week even if you do not totally love tonight's episode.
On Thursday night I'm hoping the CW's "Vampire Diaries" will suck you in. It's like a TV version of "Twilight." Edward and Bella are great but we only get to see them on screen once a year. With Stefan and Elena (the star crossed lovers here) we can follow their journey every week. This show is sexy with a capital "S." Newcomer Paul Wesley is a perfect brooding vampire while Ian Somerhalder (best known as Boone on "Lost") is deliciously devilish as his brother Damon. It's a high school drama so there will be inevitable claims of "Twilight" rip-off, but keep in mind that the books that "Vampire Diaries" are based upon came out a decade before "Twilight." It's not a rip-off. It's just a network smartly capitalizing on the current vampire craze.
Returning shows this week include "90210" for its second season which I'm told has been revamped to make it darker and edgier (thank goodness), "America's Next Top Model", '"Supernatural" and as I mentioned earlier "So You Think You Can Dance" which you know I'll be watching!
